New board rules will have devastating effect on Alabama?s homeless pet population
The Humane Society of the United States, on behalf of its 107,000 Alabama members and supporters, submitted comments in opposition to rules proposed by the Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners that would prevent animal shelters from providing affordable veterinary care to their animals. Rule No. 930-X-1-.39 would make it illegal for licensed veterinarians to work for non-veterinarian owned organizations and will result in the closure of the state?s nonprofit spay/neuter clinics.
?Access to affordable pet health care is essential to gaining ground on Alabama's growing pet overpopulation crisis,? said Mindy Gilbert, Alabama state director for The HSUS.? ?If nonprofit animal shelters can't spay and neuter their animals and if the clinics close, Alabama?will be set back decades.?
The HSUS? comments state that the proposed rules would have a devastating impact on efforts to provide basic veterinary care for Alabama?s homeless animals, contradict state and federal law, and were submitted in violation of Alabama?s Administrative Procedure Act.
The board is holding a hearing on Wednesday, October 10 at 9 a.m. to review submitted comments and vote on the proposed rules.
