Well, it?s official. Christmas is over and it?s time for a health and fitness kick. After all, you?ve probably had enough chocolate, cakes and crisps over Christmas to last a lifetime. So take a break from last week?s apps for foodies, and start downloading our top 10 iPad apps to help you find a healthy balance.
MyFitnessPal, FREE
I suspect that a lot of people will be downloading MyFitnessPal this January, and even more will be dusting off their app and getting back on plan ? because it?s already wildly popular with folks fighting the bulge.
The premise is simple ? count your calories, aim for a healthy target, and offset any exercise you do. Every day you complete a food diary, which is made easy with a food search of over 2 million products and ingredients. It even has a barcode scanner to save time.?But MyFitnessPal is about more than just calories. It can also help you track you weight, exercise and nutritional intake ? you can do it with friends, because this iPad app has social features built in.
MyPlate Calorie Counter lite, FREE
Made by livestrong.com, this app is a joy to behold. It?s basically an alternative to My Fitness Pal, and I have to admit it looks divine. You enter your weight, height, etc at the start, choose how much you want to lose each week and it sets you a target calorie count.
MyPlate doesn?t have as many features as My Fitness Pal, there?s no barcode scanner for a start, and some things can only be done by visiting the site. You also have to put up with ads, unless you?re prepared to upgrade to the paid version. But if it?s a simple calorie counter you?re after, it?ll definitely do the job.
Cook it allergy free, ?4.99
Whether you?ve got an allergy yourself, or know someone who does, this iPad app is a must have. It?s filled with free-from recipes for people with gluten, dairy, egg or nut allergies. Handy, right? and there?s more. It?s also packed with substitution ideas, to help make normal cookbook recipes allergy-free, along with fool-proof tips and tricks to help you avoid food disasters.
Couch to 5k, FREE
If 2013 is the year you?re going get off the couch and lose those extra pounds, this is the iPad app for you. Designed for exercise-beginners, it?ll ease you into a new routine, with daily goals taking you one step closer to a very realistic target ? a 5k run. And once you?ve accomplished that, there are two more iPad apps to help you push yourself up to 10k and then a half marathon.
Trish Blackwell?s Couch to 26.2, ?1.99
Got bigger plans for 2013? Then this iPad app might be more up your street. Forget a 5k target and skip straight to the marathon, with Trish Blackwell as your personal trainer. This is more than just a training plan, it comes packed with help and advice on everything from nutrition to running shoes, including videos and printable content ? so you can work your way up to that first marathon run.
Gym Goal, ?2.99
If the thought of having a personal trainer makes you cringe, and you?d rather self-teach, Gym Goal is ideal. It?s an educational fitness app for your iPad, showing you how to do different exercises with instructions, illustrations and animated videos. It also has extensive workout and progress tracking features, to help you improve.
Gym Goal includes 280 different exercises and 52 routines, which you can add to. What?s more, you can have multiple user accounts, so why not get fit together this year??Top tip ? try the free iPhone app first, to see if it?s for you.
Pocket Yoga, ?2.99
This is one of my favourite fitness apps. Pocket Yoga comes with 5 different yoga routines, each of which can be done at beginner, intermediate and expert levels, with flexible repetitions and workout lengths, to suit you. You can even choose the environment, to help create the right atmosphere.
The workout itself consists of an animated video, showing you the poses, accompanied by a voice over, with clear instructions telling you what to do next. It?s essentially a yoga DVD, but on your iPad.
Map my run, FREE
Here?s the thing ? there is no MapMyRun iPad app. But with the magic of Safari and the add to homepage function, the website is as good as an app. Better in fact. Because you can go online, map your run, plot your route and share tips with fellow runners ? then head out with your iPhone app, and track your progress. What more could you want?
iPeriod, FREE
Boys, look away! This nifty little iPad app lets you track the ups and downs of your monthly cycle. From the ebbs and flows of your period to the symtoms (both good and bad), iPeriod will help you make sense of ?that time of the month?. So you can warn your fella when you?re going to be cranky ? and get the hot water bottle ready for the cramps.
Everyday Health, FREE
This is the iPad version of a health encyclopedia. It?s packed with information on illnesses, ailments and medication, as well as ?Mom?s advice? and healthy tips. Of course, if you?re worried, you should visit the doctor ? but if you just want to want the lowdown on menopause or top tips on how to fend off a hangover ? this iPad app will come in very handy indeed.
Oh and check out the calorie burn section under the ?Food and Fitness? tab ? it?s full of weird, wonderful and practical ways to burn 50, 100 and 200 calories.
Ones to watch:
The NHS have a series of iPhone apps that are yet to be converted to iPad apps. Fingers crossed, they?ll be adapted soon, because they?ll become your no. 1 health resource ? whether you?re quitting smoking, tracking your alcohol in-take or trying to maintain a healthy BMI.
