Hackers Just Stole Over 3 Million Social Security Numbers

If you've filed tax returns in South Carolina sometime since 1998, you might be in a little bit of hot water. An unidentified, foreign hacker has gotten into the state's Department of Revenue, pilfering around 3.6 million social security numbers, and 387,000 credit and debit card numbers. In other words, no small haul. More »

Amy Winehouse play to open in Copenhagen

Steffen Schmidt / EPA

By Rolling Stone

A play based on the life and music of Amy Winehouse is expected to open in Copenhagen in 2013, the BBC reports. The Winehouse family, however, has no involvement in the production, a spokesperson confirmed.

Amy Winehouse's father: "I miss her more than I can say"

The show will feature music from late singer's two records "Frank" and "Back to Black" and will reportedly focus on "the enormous pressure a sensationalist public put on a young superstar when her problems began," according to organizers of the performance.

Source material for the play includes interviews, acceptance speeches, concerts, newspapers articles, letters and songs. Winehouse will be played by 29-year-old actress Johanne Louise Schmidt, and the show is set to open on Jan. 30 at the Danish Royal Theatre's 220-capacity Red Room.?

Nas, Tony Bennett to be honored at Amy Winehouse inspiration awards

Winehouse, who long struggled with alcohol and drug use, died last year from alcohol poisoning. Recently, collaborators Nas and Tony Bennett, plus frequent producer Salaam Remi, were the first to be honored at the Amy Winehouse Inspiration Awards & Gala, hosted by the Amy Winehouse Foundation, whose U.S. branch supports music therapy and after school music programs.?

89% Frankenweenie

Tim Burton's stop-motion remake of his own 30-minute short is a cute movie, even with the creepy subject matter. It's the story of a boy and his dog and coming to terms with loss, although that seems to get stalled since the kid brings his dog back to life. Frankenweenie is, as my pal Eric said, Burton's love letter to the Universal monsters of old, as other kids resurrect their pets into mummies, vampires, werewolves, etc. As a story, it's pretty plain and seems thin and padded out. The animation is fun to watch but I couldn't shake my questions about the character design. It feels like the only parts that move on these bulky faces are their tiny mouths. It's a strange design that undercuts the animators' efforts, and I couldn't help comparing it to the superior and expressive animation from ParaNorman. I'd say this is the weakest stop-motion film with Burton's name attached to it, but by no means is Frankenweenie a bad film. It's got some fun jokes and any story about the loss of a beloved pet is going to have plenty of heart. There are some pretty solid jokes but they all seem to pool in the first act. I enjoyed Sparky the dog's romance with the neighboring poodle, more so than any of the human relationships. Beyond the kid/dog aspect, I found it hard to engage with the movie. If you have to see one stop-motion animated film about the supernatural, check out ParaNorman instead. Nate's Grade: B-

What's in Your Bio, Part 2 | Christian Writers Guild

How about promoting in your bio your recent books, an interest you?re passionate about, or an organization you?re involved in?

Yes and No
If you?ve written a book or have a ministry, you can mention, ?Polly Esther is the author of Disco Witnessing (Way Out There Press). You can learn more about her ministry at StayinAlive.com.?

If you have several books, choose the most current or one related to this article?s topic. When I write about dealing with wayward kids, my bio reads, ?Jeanette Gardner Littleton is author of When Your Teen Goes Astray: Help and Hope from Parents Who?ve Been There (Beacon Hill Press).?

If you list an organization, make sure it connects with your topic. With an article about travel, don?t send a bio that says, ?Juli Smith is passionate about her work at Credence Life, a home for unwed mothers.?

But it could state, ?Besides traveling, Juli is passionate about her family, singing on her church worship team, and working at a home for unwed mothers.? When Juli writes on ministering to pregnant teens, her bio could read, ?Juli enjoys volunteering at Credence Life, a home for unwed mothers (credencelife.org).?

If you enjoy speaking and are seeking opportunities, mention you?re a speaker. ?Besides writing, Greg Gallagher also enjoys speaking about God and hot rods at youth, church, and civic groups.?

Contact Me?Or Not
After one magazine published my email address in an article about portable church buildings, I got all kinds of odd questions. And that address is still floating on the internet in the magazine archives.

If you give an email address, set up a free account with a service such as Gmail instead of giving your primary address. But list your writing website if you have one.

Get Personal
It?s fine to include a bit of personal information. You can take a conservative approach, ?Mark Littleton lives in Kansas City with his wife and children.? Or provide some interesting tidbit: ?When she?s not writing, Patty Andrews likes to work with toddlers in her Minnesota church and sing with her two sisters.?

I?ve been known to send in, ?When Jeanette Littleton is not writing, she enjoys listening to oldies on her 1960 Seeburg jukebox.?

Some editors love this. It can get boring in a magazine when every author is listed as ?[Name] lives in [location] with her husband, [name], and her [number] children.?

Jeanette Gardner Littleton, a CWG mentor, is a fulltime editor and writer. With her husband Mark, she directs the Heart of American Christian Writers Network, serving metropolitan Kansas City (www.HACWN.org).

ASUS PadFone 2 review: two times is a charm for this phone-in-tablet combo

ASUS PadFone 2 review

It's only been half a year since the peculiar PadFone made its much-delayed entry into select markets, and earlier this week, ASUS' launch of its second-gen phone-in-tablet brings us back to this old question: are we better off with just one mobile screen instead of two? Ask any ordinary manufacturer and the answer is likely the latter, because who doesn't want to sell more products? Similarly, carriers would likely back such manufacturers for the sake of selling more data plans, even if they admire ASUS' efforts (and they could already be selling ASUS tablets in the first place). Some folks also argue that if you have to carry the tablet module with you anyway, you might as well have two separate devices for better multitasking.

It seems like there's a huge mountain to climb here, but on the flip side, ASUS' innovative differentiation does have some advantages. You only need one data plan (and no tethering required) for both form factors, you get to keep the same data in one place instead of having to duplicate them and you can pretty much instantly switch between a small screen and a large screen for the same content. Not to mention that there's also the added functionality of charging up the phone while it's sitting inside the tablet. Alas, the original PadFone and PadFone Station didn't quite hit the spot: the combined weight and bulk made it tough to justify the phone-in-tablet idea, which is why we said it's all about the PadFone 2 in our review. Let's see if ASUS has done it right this time 'round.

iPad 4 vs. iPad 2 vs. iPad mini: Which iPad should you get?

iPad 4 vs. iPad 2 vs. iPad mini: Which iPad should you get?

The latest, greatest, iPad -- in this case the late 2012 iPad 4 -- can't be considered a no-brainer buy this year because Apple has now also introduced the all-new iPad mini. The iPad 2 has also stuck around in some sort of limbo-like middle ground, further complicating your purchasing decision.

Power vs portability, starting at $329 vs. starting at $399 or $499 -- there's a lot of factors to consider.

(Late) 2012 iPad product line

Just when you thought Apple had already introduced the new iPad this year, they went and introduced a newer one! If you haven't taken the iPad plunge yet, or if you're looking to upgrade from another tablet or a first generation iPad, that just means you have even better value for your money.

iPad mini: $329 Wi-Fi, $459 Wi-Fi + cellular

The iPad mini is slightly cheaper than the iPad 4 or the iPad 2, but that's just a side benefit of being a little smaller and a lot lighter. In terms of hardware, it's got basically the same body and components as the 2012 iPod touch 5, including the aluminum unibody, Apple A5 processor, and storage options. It has the iPad 2-style screen, however, at 1024x768, only shrunk down from 9.7 inches to 7.9 inches. That makes it slightly higher density -- the same 163 ppi as the iPhone 3GS if you're keeping score -- than the 132 ppi iPad 2, but nowhere near the 264 ppi of the iPad 4.

The lightness is the biggest differentiator, however. You can hold it easily in one hand, and while it's not small enough to be an on-the-go style device like the iPhone or iPod touch, it's not relegated to be a sitting-down, on-you-lap style device like the full sized iPad either. It's much better lying down, and much easier to hold for longer periods of time. It's also easier to stash in big jacket pocket or small carry bad.

Apple offers the iPad mini Wi-Fi at three price points depending on the amount of storage:

  • 16GB - $329
  • 32GB - $429
  • 64GB - $529

If you want it with 3G GSM/CDMA, and 4G LTE version, the prices go up $130:

  • 16GB - $459
  • 32GB - $559
  • 64GB - $659

If you value portability over the power of the processor and prettiness of the screen, get the iPad mini.

iPad 2 (2011) 16GB - $399 Wi-Fi, $529 Wi-Fi + 3G

iPad 2: Everything you need to know

If you want it with 3G GSM/CDMA, and 4G LTE version, the prices go up $130:

  • 16GB - $629
  • 32GB - $729
  • 64GB - $829

If you know you want a top of the line iPad, with the latest and greatest features and every bit of cool technology Apple has to offer, then get the new iPad.

Any questions?

If you're still not sure, hit up our iPhone Forums to get the help you need to make up your mind.

(AP) ? Hurricane Sandy's howling winds and pelting rains lashed precarious shantytowns, stranded travelers and downed power lines Wednesday as it roared across Jamaica on a course that would take it on to Cuba and then possibly threaten Florida and the Bahamas.

Sandy's death toll was at least two. An elderly man was killed in Jamaica when he was crushed by a boulder that rolled onto his clapboard house, police reported. Earlier Wednesday, a woman in Haiti was swept away by a rushing river she was trying to cross.

In some southern towns on Jamaica, a few crocodiles were caught in rushing floodwaters that carried them out of their homes in mangrove thickets, showing up in residential districts where electricity was knocked out, Jamaica's environmental agency said. One big croc took up temporary residence in a family's front yard in the city of Portmore.

By Wednesday evening the hurricane's eye had crossed Jamaica and emerged off its northern coast near the town of Port Antonio, meteorologists said, but rain and winds continued to pound the Caribbean island, which was dwarfed by the sprawling Sandy.

It was the first direct hit by the eye of a hurricane on Jamaica since Hurricane Gilbert 24 years ago, and fearful authorities closed the island's international airports and police ordered 48-hour curfews in major towns to keep people off the streets and deter looting. Cruise ships changed their itineraries to avoid the storm, which made landfall five miles (8 kilometers) east of the capital, Kingston.

Flash floods and mudslides were a threat for this debt-shackled tropical island of roughly 2.7 million inhabitants, which has a crumbling infrastructure and a number of sprawling shantytowns built on steep embankments and along gullies that sluice runoff water to the sea.

In the hilly community of Kintyre, on the outskirts of Kingston, Sharon Gayle and a few of her neighbors expected to completely lose the town's bridge over the Hope River, which washed away a section of the span just three weeks ago during a heavy downpour. The shell of a concrete home that collapsed into the river and killed two people several years ago still lies toppled on the sandy banks.

"We've gotten cut off here a whole heap of times. But with a big nasty hurricane on the way, I'm really nervous. We're trying not to show it in front of the children though," the mother of three said, huddling under a sopping white towel as she stared at the rising river.

The 18th named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season was expected to pass over eastern Cuba early Thursday, missing the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, where pretrial hearings were being held for a suspect in the deadly 2000 attack on the destroyer USS Cole off Yemen.

Cuban authorities issued a hurricane watch for several provinces. A hurricane watch was issued for the central and northwestern Bahamas, where the storm was predicted to pass Thursday and Friday morning.

Forecasters at the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said tropical storm conditions were possible along the southeastern Florida coast, the Upper Keys and Florida Bay by Friday morning. A tropical storm watch was in effect for the area, the center said.

In southwestern Haiti, a woman died in the town of Camp Perrin after she was swept away by a river she was trying to cross, said Marie Alta Jean-Baptiste, head of the country's civil protection office. There were reports of extensive damage to Port Salut on Haiti's far-southwestern coast after a river burst its banks. Mayor Larock Pierre Clervert said a hotel was destroyed by flood waters.

Across Jamaica, the poor in slums and moneyed residents in gated communities hunkered down at home as powerful winds shrieked around buildings and sent sheets of rain sideways.

Stranded business travelers and a smattering of locals rode out the Category 1 hurricane in hotels clustered along a strip in Kingston's financial district. Some read prayer books or novels, while others watched movies or communicated with loved ones on computers.

Cris Hopkinson, a Toronto woman who was on a business trip, said she hoped to catch a flight off the island Friday once the stormy weather cleared.

"For now, I'm just hoping that the glass in the windows doesn't shatter from the winds," Hopkinson said in the dining room of the Courtleigh Hotel.

About a mile away in the rough neighborhood of Grants Pen, where shops have been ransacked in the past during storms, a number of young men ignored the curfew, riding on bicycles or walking in small groups in the steady rain.

Cecile Graham, a mother of two teenagers, said she was worried about the possibility of burglaries or looting at the small markets and shops that line the main road.

"I hope that all the police are out and we won't have the looting that has taken place before," she said.

Police slowly drove through drenched communities in the coastal capital with their cruisers' lights flashing. A senior police superintendent was shot in troubled West Kingston, but the circumstances were murky.

The storm was predicted to drop as much as 12 inches (25 centimeters) of rain, especially over central and eastern parts of Jamaica, the country's meteorological service said. Some isolated spots could see as much as 20 inches (50 centimeters), according to U.S. forecasters. Sea water washed over the streets of Port Royal, a depressed fishing village at the tip of a spit of land near Kingston's airport.

More than 100 fishermen were stranded in outlying Pedro Cays, a lobster- and conch-rich area about 40 miles (66 kilometers) off Jamaica's southern coast that was the first area of Jamaica to get Sandy's winds and rain. Some of them told local media they lacked fuel to get back to the mainland, but authorities said they willfully disobeyed an evacuation order.

On the mainland, over 1,000 people moved to shelters, but others living in low-lying areas on the mainland refused to evacuate their homes because they were fearful that their possessions would be stolen.

Airports in Kingston and Montego Bay shut down for the day and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. announced that its Allure of the Seas megaship would not stop at Jamaica's northern Falmouth terminal on Wednesday, remaining at sea instead. Other cruise lines also rerouted ships from port calls to Montego Bay and Ocho Rios.

While Jamaica was ravaged by bands from Hurricane Ivan in 2004 and other powerful hurricanes centered offshore, the eye of a hurricane hasn't carved across the island since Gilbert in 1988, Jamaican meteorologist Jacqueline Spence said.

Late Wednesday afternoon, Sandy was a Category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph (130 kph). It was moving north at about 14 mph (22 kph). Hurricane-force winds extended outward up to 30 miles (45 kilometers) from the center.

Far out in the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Tony posed no threat to land. The storm had maximum sustained winds of about 50 mph (85 kph) and was moving east-northeast at 25 mph (41 kph). Its center was 1,060 miles (1,705 kilometers) west-southwest of the Azores.

VMware suffers profit drop, steals Microsoft VP

VMware has reported a slight drop in third fiscal quarter 2012 income despite enjoying record revenue for the quarter.

At the same time, the cloud and virtualisation technology leader expects continued growth to come thanks to a couple of key acquisitions that it expects to help it be a leader in the development of software-defined data centers going forward.

VMware reported revenue for the third quarter of $US1.13 billion, up 20 percent from the $US942 million it reported for its third fiscal 2011 quarter.

Net income for the third quarter was $US157 million, compared to $US178 million for the third quarter of 2011

Revenue from license sales hit $US491 million for the quarter, up about 11 percent over last year, while services revenue rose about 29 percent during the same period to $US643 million.

Carl Eschenbach, chief operating officer and co-president of VMware, said a big feature of the third quarter was the $US1.2 billion VMware invested in acquiring software-defined networking (SDN) startup Nicira and its acquisition of DynamicOps, a developer of management software for provisioning apps and services across heterogeneous cloud infrastructures.

The idea of the software-defined data centre has emerged as the clear winner in terms of data center development going forward, Eschenbach said.

"The excitement around Nicira validates our approach to the software-defined data centre," he said.

For VMware, that spells growing strength for its vCloud Suite of software for building and managing a complete cloud infrastructure, as well as its Cloud Operations Services for helping customers transform their IT infrastructures into cloud infrastructures, Eschenbach said.

"The response to vCloud Suite and Cloud Ops from both partners and customers has been encouraging," he said.

VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger said vCloud Suite is VMware's first implementation of the Nicira SDN technology, giving his company a big opportunity to expand its reach into customers' public, private and hybrid clouds.

"We are the company customers increasingly turn to for help for transforming their IT to the cloud," Gelsinger said.

New CFO, nicked from Microsoft

VMware also used the release of its third quarter 2012 financial results to unveil the hiring of Jonathan Chadwick as its new CFO. Chadwick, who will officially take the CFO spot on November 5, most recently served as corporate vice president of arch-rival Microsoft and CFO of Skype, which Microsoft acquired.

Chadwick will replace Mark Peek, VMware's former CFO, who left the company in June.

Chadwick brings a wealth of financial experience to virtualisation and cloud software developer VMware, including a stint at arch-rival Microsoft, where he most recently served as corporate vice president of Microsoft and CFO of Skype.

Prior to Microsoft, Chadwick was executive vice president and CFO at McAfee, and served a few different financial roles at Cisco Systems.

At VMware, Chadwick will report directly to CEO Pat Gelsinger, who in July took over that role from former CEO Paul Maritz.

Looking behind to vRAM, ahead to 2013

VMware's Eschenbach said VMware's ending of its short-lived vRAM licensing scheme and returning to its previous CPU-based licensing model was welcomed by both channel partners and customers.

Channel partners said the reinstatement of the CPU-based licensing model removed a big sales barrier in the third and fourth quarters of 2012, while customers prefer the CPU-based model because of the simplification versus the vRAM model, he said.

When asked about the potential threat to VMware by the expected release of System Centre 2012 by rival Microsoft, Eschenbach dismissed any concerns by saying that it has yet to reach the market and that the global economic environment is the main factor going forward.

"While Microsoft is coming to market with a new platform, it should be called out that this is the third time in seven years that Microsoft has come to market with a 'good enough' product," he said.

Looking forward, Eschenbach expects VMware's fourth quarter 2012 revenue of between $US1.26 billion and $US1.29 billion, or up between 19 percent and 22 percent over the fourth quarter of 2011. That includes a 14 percent to 18 percent rise in license revenue to between $US587 million and $US605 million.

For all of 2012, VMware is maintaining the midpoint of its previous guidance by calling for total revenue of $US4.57 billion to $4.6 billion, or up between 21.4 percent and 22.2 percent over 2011, Eschenbach said. Licensing revenue for 2012 is expected to be up from 12.8 percent to 13.8 percent over 2011 because of a seasonably strong fourth quarter, he said.

Correction: Romney-Russia story

WASHINGTON (AP) ? In a story Oct. 20 about Russia in the U.S. presidential campaign, The Associated Press reported erroneously that Moscow abstained in a U.N. Security Council vote allowing military intervention in Syria. That vote was on military intervention in Libya, not Syria.

A corrected version of the story is below:

Romney rips Russia, at least on campaign trail

Romney rips Russia on campaign trail, but if elected may need to seek compromise

By DESMOND BUTLER

Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney calls Russia the No. 1 foe of the United States and promises to stand up to Russian President Vladimir Putin. But if he's elected president, he might find that he'll need Moscow's help.

Russia plays a critical role in facilitating the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan. The United States also needs Moscow's cooperation on keeping nuclear materials away from terrorists and American adversaries, and preventing gridlock at the U.N. Security Council, where both countries have vetoes.

While Romney has criticized President Barack Obama's "reset" ? his administration's policy for improving relations with Russia ? he has not said what exactly he would do differently beyond taking a tougher approach. Given U.S. interests in a cooperative relationship with Russia, some analysts think Romney may have to tone down his rhetoric if wins the White House.

"He may discover the value of Russia as a partner on some issues," says Andrew Kuchins, the head of the Russia program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

U.S.-Russian relations, like international affairs in general, have not been major issues in a presidential campaign dominated by the economy. But they are an area of sharp disagreement between the candidates and could be an issue in Monday's presidential debate, which will focus on foreign policy.

Obama administration officials see improved relations with Russia as a foreign policy success after years of tension during George W. Bush's presidency. They cite the opening of a supply corridor to Afghanistan, the signing of a major arms control treaty, known as New Start, and progress on trade issues, including Russia's entry into the World Trade Organization.

While Russia has often blocked Western initiatives in the U.N. Security Council, it has gone along in key instances. Last year, Moscow abstained in a vote allowing military intervention in Libya, though Russian officials later accused the U.S. and allies of abusing the council's mandate. In 2010, Russia also backed new sanctions against Iran after a compromise. However, it has opposed further sanctions aimed at curbing Iranian nuclear ambitions.

Recent heated disputes over Syria and Iran and missile defense show that the relationship remains testy and may be getting tense. In a sign of faltering ties, Russian officials said recently that they would not extend a 20-year-old program for U.S. help securing Russia's nuclear stockpile unless it was substantially overhauled. The Nunn-Lugar program is considered one of the hallmarks of post-Cold War cooperation.

Also, last month, Russia ordered U.S. foreign aid workers out of the country, charging that they were inciting unrest by supporting government opponents.

Romney advisers say Obama has conceded much to Russia and received little in return. They accuse Obama of being weak with Putin, whom they see as bent on undermining democracy at home and abroad and harming U.S. interests wherever he can. They cite Russian opposition to U.S. and European efforts to reign in Iran's nuclear ambitions and to bring down the Syrian government.

"On every major issue, we have received nothing but intransigence, obstruction, counterproductive behavior," says Romney foreign policy adviser Alex Wong.

Romney has criticized Obama's decision to scrap a Bush administration plan for a European missile defense system and replace it with one that was less threatening to Russia. He says this offended important allies like Poland and the Czech Republic, which were to host the original system, and won nothing from Moscow. Indeed, Moscow continues to oppose Obama's missile defense plans.

Romney also says the New Start treaty accomplished little because Russia's arsenal was already below treaty limits. The Obama administration says the agreement allowed a resumption of U.S. inspections of Russian weapons facilities that had ceased when a previous treaty expired.

If elected, Romney "will reset the reset," his campaign website says.

Obama's backers say Romney's comments are overblown and reflect his lack of foreign policy experience. For instance, they say, in naming Russia as the worst U.S. foe, Romney skipped over al-Qaida and Iran.

"The goal of the reset was to not let our disagreements with Russia prevent us from working together on our shared interests," says Spencer Boyer, a national security adviser to the Obama campaign. "That has been a success."

For all his tough talk, it's not clear what Romney would change, especially considering the potential consequences. A rupture in relations with Russia could prevent a smooth exit from Afghanistan. A supply corridor that runs through Russia and Central Asia is one of only two possible routes for the millions of tons of military equipment that the U.S. needs to bring home. The other one runs through Pakistan, which once closed it after a NATO airstrike killed Pakistani soldiers.

Advisers say Romney would proceed with the Obama administration's missile defense plans if they are effective, while retaining the option to revert to the Bush administration plan. In a foreign policy speech this month, Romney said he wouldn't allow Putin any flexibility on missile defense, a jibe at Obama, who was caught on a microphone telling then-President Dmitry Medvedev last March that the U.S. would have more flexibility to work on missile defense issues after the election.

Romney's campaign website says he would review the New Start treaty. When asked what that means, Wong said that Romney will review everything when he gets into office.

It's not unusual for presidential candidates to talk tough about an adversary during a campaign only to become more pragmatic in office. In fact, Putin stoked anti-American sentiments in his presidential campaign. Yet one of his first moves was to approve a transit facility for NATO at a Russian airbase.

Still, Romney's blunt talk has been noticed in Moscow. Putin said in a TV interview last month that it justified his opposition to U.S. missile defense plans, which he says could undermine Russia's nuclear deterrent.

But he also said he could work with Romney.

"We'll work with whichever president is elected by the American people," Putin said. "But our effort will be only as efficient as our partners will want it to be."

Lebanon launches major security operation

BEIRUT (AP) ? Lebanese troops launched a major security operation on Monday to open all roads and force gunmen off the streets, trying to contain an outburst of violence set off by the assassination of a top intelligence official who was a powerful opponent of Syria. Sectarian clashes killed at least five people.

Opponents of Syria have blamed the regime in Damascus for the killing of Lebanese Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hassan in a Beirut car bomb on Friday. With Lebanon already tense and deeply divided over the civil war next door, the assassination has threatened to drag the country back into the kind of sectarian strife that plagued it for decades ? much of it linked to Syria.

"The nation is passing through a crucial and critical period and tension has risen in some areas to unprecedented levels," the army said in a statement. It urged politicians to be careful not to incite violence "because the fate of the nation is on the edge."

"Security is a red line," the statement said, adding that strict measures are being taken to "prevent Lebanon from being an arena for settling regional problems."

Cracks of gunfire rang out in Beirut as soldiers and armored personnel carriers with heavy machine guns took up position on major thoroughfares and dismantled roadblocks. The state news agency reported sporadic gunfire in parts of Beirut and around the northern city of Tripoli.

Tripoli saw clashes between two neighborhoods that support opposite sides in Syria's conflict and have a decades-long history of shooting at each other. Four people were killed in the fighting between the Sunni neighborhood of Bab Tabbaneh and the adjacent Alawite neighborhood of Jabal Mohsen, which supports the Syrian regime.

Lebanon and Syria share similar sectarian divides that have fed tensions in both countries. Most of Lebanon's Sunnis have backed Syria's mainly Sunni rebels, while Lebanese Shiites tend to back President Bashar Assad who belongs to the minority Alawite sect ? an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

Tripoli residents said scores of soldiers deployed around the city in an attempt to bring back calm. The military also set up checkpoints, searched cars and asked people for identity cards.

Security officials also said one man was killed in the Wadi Zayneh area north of the southern city of Sidon. They said the clashes also wounded at least six people in Beirut and 11 in Tripoli. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Al-Hassan, the assassinated intelligence official, was a Sunni who challenged Syria and its powerful Lebanese ally, the Shiite militant group Hezbollah.

Al-Hassan's killing has imperiled Lebanon's fragile political balance. Many politicians blamed Syria for the killing and angry protesters tried to storm the government palace after al-Hassan's funeral on Sunday, venting their rage at leaders they consider puppets of a murderous Syrian regime. But they were pushed back by troops who fired their guns in the air and filled the street with tear gas.

Prime Minister Najib Mikati, a Sunni, told As-Safir newspaper that when he took up his post last year, he intended to protect all Lebanese, particularly Sunnis.

"I was convinced that through this mission, I am protecting my country, my people and especially fellow members of my sect," he said.

The prime minister of Lebanon is usually a Sunni according to a sectarian division of top posts in the state. Over the past year, pro-Syrian Hezbollah and its allies have come to dominate the government.

On Sunday night, a group of anti-Syrian protesters started an open-ended sit-in outside Mikati's house in his hometown of Tripoli. The protesters said they will only end the sit-in when Mikati resigns.

Ambassadors of Britain, the U.S., Russia, China and France and the U.N. Special Coordinator for Lebanon met President Michel Suleiman to express support for him.

"The permanent members at the United Nations call upon all the parties in Lebanon to preserve stability," Derek Plumbly, the U.N. representative, told reporters in Arabic while surrounded by the five ambassadors. "We strongly condemn any attempt to shake Lebanon's stability."

Later in the day, Mikati met with Suleiman but did not make any statements afterward.

An Associated Press photographer saw dozens of gunmen roaming the streets on Monday in Beirut's predominantly Sunni neighborhood of Tariq Jadideh, where fighting has taken place. Local Sunni leaders were calling the gunmen by telephone urging them to pull out of the streets.

In some roads around Tariq Jadideh, masked Sunni gunmen set up checkpoints, stopping cars and asking people about their destination and where they were coming from.

A woman who lives in the neighborhood said the fighting began shortly after midnight and lasted until sunrise.

"We couldn't sleep because of the shooting. There were also some booms," she said, referring to rocket-propelled grenades. She asked that her name not be used for fear of reprisals.

Estranged wife of suspected Wisconsin spa gunman among dead

MILWAUKEE (Reuters) - The estranged wife of the suspected gunman in a shooting rampage at a Milwaukee-area spa was among the three women killed, officials said on Monday.

Those killed in the Sunday morning shooting included Zina Haughton, 42, of Brown Deer, Wisconsin, who worked at the spa and was suspect Radcliffe Haughton's wife, officials said.

Radcliffe Haughton, 45, was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the Azana Salon and Spa in suburban Brookfield hours after the shooting.

The other women killed were Cary Robuck, 35, of Racine, Wisconsin, and Maelyn M. Lind, 38, of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, according to the Waukesha County Medical Examiner's office. Four people were wounded.

Haughton had been placed under a restraining order and directed to surrender his firearms to authorities this month in connection with a domestic abuse case involving his wife.

On October 8, the same date he was ordered to stay away from his wife after police said he slashed the tires on her car, Haughton posted to his Facebook page: "Need to get out of Wisconsin, HELP ..."

The next day, he issued a second plea: "Can anyone help me get out of Wisconsin?"

That was the last posting to his page, which lists his marital status as "divorced."

An earlier posting, from October 3, the day before he is alleged to have slashed his wife's tires, said simply: "Shooting birds ..."

"We believe this incident was domestic violence-related," Brookfield Police Chief Daniel Tushaus told a news conference on Sunday.

According to the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Haughton purchased a .40 caliber handgun from a private citizen on Saturday, the day before the shooting.

Haughton had a previous police record for domestic violence. He was cited for misdemeanor disorderly conduct, described as domestic abuse, stemming from an incident on January 8, 2011. That charge was dismissed on June 15, 2011, records show.

A spokesman for Froedtert Hospital said three of the four people wounded were in satisfactory condition, while one remained in critical condition. All four are women aged between 22 and 40.

The shooting was the second incident of gun violence at a U.S. beauty spa in a matter of days. On Thursday, a gunman opened fire at a salon in suburban Orlando, Florida, killing three women and wounding a fourth, his wife, before fleeing and committing suicide at a nearby residence. The suspect in that shooting had likewise been ordered to keep away from his spouse.

The last few months have been marked by a string of mass shootings in the United States. On September 27, a disgruntled former employee killed six people and took his own life in a shooting rampage at a Minneapolis sign company from which he had been fired.

In August, a mass shooting at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin claimed seven lives, including that of the gunman. In July, a gunman killed 12 people and wounded 58 in a shooting rampage at a Colorado movie theater.

Nationally, there were 458 workplace homicides in 2011 and 518 in 2010, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data.

WinZip 17

It seems like WinZip has been around since the dawn of PC computing. And indeed, at 21, it's one of the few popular programs still in use to have attained drinking age. And by popular, I mean it recently passed the billion download mark. But the just-launched version 17 shows that you can teach old dogs new tricks, at least when it comes to software. WinZip 17 ($29.95 direct) plays a useful role in this day of cloud computing, social networks, Windows 8, mobile devices, and even graphics hardware acceleration. The program even has a modern, if not futuristic look, with a simple yet functional Office-style button ribbon.

As you may have guessed, it does a heck of a lot more than just zip and unzip files now. And it supports many more archive file formats, which you may run into when downloading on the Web. In addition to ZIP, it can handle TAR, GZIP, CAB, RAR, 7z, ARJ, LZH, BHZ, and many more. It also offers government-level encryption to protect your files, as well as the cloud and social-network integration mentioned. It can also create self-extracting ZIPs so that you're recipient doesn?t need a utility to extract included files.

Setup/Signup
WinZip, despite its name, is now available for not only Windows XP through 8, but also for Mac OS X, Android, and iOS. The non-Windows versions, however, don't get the full functionality of the Windows version. You can download WinZip 17 as a free 45-day trial version before you buy. The evaluation version displays a banner ad and dialog asking you to purchase whenever you fire up the program. Installation also adds an Outlook plugin, which actually generated errors when I used Outlook to send emails.

Interface
The new WinZip's main window has the look of recent Microsoft Office interfaces, with a ribbon control bar. You can, however, revert to the classic WinZip interface if you prefer. Either choice is far more useable and attractive than 7Zip's. You can even dress WinZip in themes, but there's no Wizard view as there used to be and like that still offered by WinRAR.

WinZip's first ribbon choice is Create, which offers options for encrypting, resizing photos, watermark, and even converting to PDF. A new button is a cloud with a down-pointing arrow, which lets you create zips from your Dropbox, Google Drive, or Microsoft SkyDrive online storage. (Even though there's a Mac version of WinZip, it doesn't support iCloud file storage.) Of course, those choices required a sign-in to the cloud account. The Copy To ribbon set also offers those three cloud services as targets, too. I'd like to see Box (Free, 4 stars) added, since a lot of businesses use it.

Also like Office apps, at the very top of the app's window are small quick-access buttons, in WinZip's case these are for creating a new zip file, opening one, or?most interestingly?a cloud icon, which sends files to WinZip's ZipSend online storage service. More on this in a bit. WinZip also adds right-click choices to your Windows Explorer windows: You can create or add the selected files to an archive, or zip and e-mail the files. The context menus are also fully configurable, so you can just include the WinZip commands you want.

The remaining menu sets are Share, which lets you create a zip download on Facebook, LinkedIn, or Twitter. WinZip's own MyZip cloud storage is also an option here, as is FTP uploading. Backup, which lets you create a compressed Zip of everything in you Documents folder, photos, desktop, email, or favorites. This is a handy tool in a pinch.

Speaking of tools, that's the name of the next activity menu choice. Included are those for creating multi-part zip files, self-extracting ones, UUEncoding (remember those, from Usenet days?), and encrypting with a password. There are also tools for showing the last output messages of test results on the last zip action, a comment adder, and diagnostics. In my tests, the diagnostics and Last Output tools displayed the same dialog.

The final tool is the Performance Scan, which looks for unneeded and temporary files and registry issues, but when you click "Fix" it wants you to by the company's system cleaner software. Stick with CCleaner (Free, 3.5 stars) or SlimWare (Free, 4.5 stars) for this.

Cloud Connections
I was able to easily create zips from files that WinZip downloaded from my cloud accounts, and as with all zip creation in the program, a message box displayed after the operation, telling me how much space had been saved through compression. Likewise I could directly and easily upload a ZIP I'd just created to my cloud account.

Mandated reporter public situation - Adoption.com Forums

I'm not sure whether I would film it or call 911 right away. If was fairly sure there were cameras filming I'd call 911, but otherwise I might worry about getting some evidence and film it. If I had a buddy there or another onlooker with a smart phone seemed cooperative I'd quietly ask that they film while I call or vice versa.

I read a study in grad school that silence from the public implies consent and agreement with the abusive parent to the child, and that even if the parent is harsher with the child after a stranger tells them off for the abuse, it is helpful to the child to know that others see that's what's going on is not okay and not their fault. Not sure how true that is, and I'm sure there are exceptions, but it was an interesting study. I saw a boy being verbally abused in a laundromat by his mom, just getting hollered at and cussed at for every little thing, or nothing at all. I walked over when she took a load out to the car and said I thought it was sad she was treating him that way and that I could see he was doing his best. Not sure if that was the right thing to do, and in most cases I wouldn't comment on a parent to their child, but he looked about to implode or something. He gave me a weak smile and kept on folding at warp speed. Nothing I could call the cops about, and confronting that parent would likely have led to a very violent confrontation in front of my children, but I felt I had to say something to that child.

There was a case a few years ago where a mom was abusive with her little girl in a mall and kept whacking her in her carseat in the parking lot, and the security footage was released to the media to help catch her and be sure that the child was okay. She was an Irish Traveler and not at all willing to cooperate with the authorities, so it became a big case in the news. I don't know how it turned out but know they took it seriously.

Spears' dad feared meltdown would kill singer

Britney Spears in New York in May.

By Brandon Lowery, Reuters

LOS ANGELES -- The father of pop star Britney Spears was terrified by his daughter's deepening drug addiction as her life spiraled out of control five years ago, his attorney told jurors on Friday.

"Jamie (Spears) was living in constant fear that he was going to look at the TV one day and see Britney was dead," said Leon Gladstone, Jamie Spears' attorney.

Gladstone's remarks came on the second day of a civil trial that has pitted the singer and her parents against Sam Lutfi, who was one of her closest friends in 2007 and early 2008 and who described himself as her manager at that time.

Lutfi, now 38, was considered to be Spears' live-in "gate keeper" who determined who was allowed to see her during her personal and career meltdown in 2007.

He is suing the singer for a chunk of her earnings at that time.

Lutfi also is suing Spears' parents, Jamie and Lynne Spears. He claims Jamie Spears punched him in the chest at Britney Spears' Los Angeles area home in January 2008, and that Lynne Spears libeled him in her book, "Through the Storm," published later that year.

The trial has lifted the lid on a tumultuous period when Spears famously shaved her head, was twice placed on psychiatric holds, lost custody of her children and was placed under her father's conservatorship, giving him control of her health and finances.

Nick Ut / AP

Britney Spears' parents, Lynne Spears, left, and Jamie Spears arrive at court in Los Angeles on Friday, Oct. 19.

Depressed and addicted for years
Gladstone said that Jamie Spears had been trying to get his daughter to go to rehab after her 2006 divorce from Kevin Federline and at one point he convinced Federline to obtain sole legal custody of their two young children, Gladstone said.

While the "Toxic" singer's problems began to reach their a peak after her divorce from Federline, her spiral into depression began years earlier, Gladstone said.

The once-happy and humble pop star became angry and impulsive in 2003 after breaking up with fellow superstar Justin Timberlake, Gladstone said. That was the year she went to Las Vegas and ended up getting married to a childhood friend - a marriage that lasted 55 hours.

Gladstone described how Jamie Spears went to see Britney at a Los Angeles hospital in 2007, and found her strapped to a gurney and yelling.

"He is scared to death," Gladstone said, "and he's thinking to himself, 'My daughter has lost everything. Here she is, in a psychiatric ward, out of her head.'"

From gas station to superstar manager
Lutfi is seeking 15 percent of Spears' income over several months in 2007 and 2008, when he said he managed her. She earned $800,000 to $1 million per month over that period, attorneys said.

Before that, Lutfi had worked at a gas station and the only proof he was her manager was a mostly blank form contract Lutfi had downloaded from the Internet and an oral contract with the singer, said attorney Joel Boxer, who is representing Spears' estate.

"Sam Lutfi never conducted himself as if he was Britney's manager," Boxer told jurors. "Mr. Lutfi did not earn a dollar for Britney."

AP file

Sam Lutfi leaves UCLA Medical Center after visiting Britney Spears on Jan. 31, 2008.

Spears' income at the time resulted from deals brokered before Spears even knew Lutfi, Boxer said.

Lutfi's attorney, Joe Schleimer, argued in opening statements on Thursday that Lutfi had a valid deal with the pop star, and tried but failed to keep her out of trouble.

Attorneys for the singer's family and estate say Lutfi tried to take control of her and keep her away from her family.

On the alleged assault by Jamie Spears, Gladstone said on Friday that the worried father merely touched Lutfi to get his attention.

Spears, now 30, has since made a comeback with world tours hit albums and a new job as a judge on TV talent show "The X-Factor."

She was not in court on Friday and is not expected to attend the trial although her parents are expected to testify. The trial will continue next week.
