NTSB: Pilots relied on automatic speed control

(AP) ? The pilots of Asiana Flight 214 relied on automated cockpit equipment to control the jetliner's speed as they landed at San Francisco airport, but realized too late they were flying too low and too slow before the aircraft crashed, investigators said Tuesday.

The new details were not conclusive about the cause of Saturday's crash, but they raised potential areas of focus: Was there a mistake made in setting the automatic speed control, did it malfunction or were the pilots not fully aware of what the plane was doing?

One of the most puzzling aspects of the crash has been why the wide-body Boeing 777 jet came in far too low and slow, clipping its landing gear and then its tail on a rocky seawall just short the runway. The crash killed two of the 307 people and injured scores of others, most not seriously.

Among those injured were two flight attendants in the back of the plane, who survived despite being thrown onto the runway when the plane slammed into the seawall and the tail broke off.

National Transportation Safety Board chairman Deborah Hersman said the autothrottle was set for 157 mph and the pilots assumed it was controlling the plane's airspeed. However, the autothrottle was only "armed" or ready for activation, she said.

Hersman said the pilot at the controls, identified by Korean authorities as Lee Gang-guk, was only about halfway through his training on the Boeing 777 and was landing that type of aircraft at the San Francisco airport for the first time ever. And the co-pilot, identified as Lee Jeong-Min, was on his first trip as a flight instructor.

In the 777, turning the autothrottle on is a two-step process ? first it is armed, then it is engaged, Boeing pilots said. Hersman didn't say whether the Asiana's autothrottle was engaged.

Bob Coffman, an American Airlines captain who has flown 777s, said the only way he could think of for Asiana plane to slow as quickly at the NTSB has described would be if somehow the autothrottle has shifted into the idle mode.

Only moments before the crash did the training captain realize the autothrottle wasn't controlling the plane's speed, Hersman said.

"This is one of the two hallmarks of complexity and challenge in the industry right now," said Doug Moss, an Airbus A320 a pilot for a major U.S. airline and an aviation safety consultant in Torrance, Calif. "It's automation confusion because from what Deborah Hersman said, it appears very likely the pilots were confused as to what autothrottle and pitch mode the airplane was in. It's very likely they believed the autothrottles were on when in fact they were only armed."

Their last second efforts to rev the plane back up and abort the landing failed, although numerous survivors report hearing the engines roar just before impact.

"We just seemed to be flying in way too low. Last couple seconds before it happened the engines really revved into high gear. Just waaah! Like the captain was saying 'oh no, we gotta get out of here.' And then, boom! The back end just lifted up, just really jolted everybody in their seats," said crash survivor Elliot Stone, who owns a martial arts studio in Scotts Valley.

While in the U.S., drug and alcohol tests are standard procedure after air accidents, this is not required for foreign pilots and Hersman said the Asiana pilots had not undergone any testing

A final determination on the cause of the crash is months away, and Hersman cautioned against drawing any conclusions based on the information revealed so far:

Seven seconds before impact, someone in the cockpit asked for more speed after apparently noticing that the jet was flying far slower than its recommended landing speed. A few seconds later, the yoke began to vibrate violently, an automatic warning telling the pilot the plane is losing lift and in imminent danger of an aerodynamic stall. One and a half seconds before impact came a command to abort the landing.

There's been no indication, from verbal calls or mechanical issues, that an emergency was ever declared by pilots. Most airlines would require all four pilots to be present for the landing, the time when something is most likely to go wrong, experienced pilots said. In addition to the two pilots, a third was "monitoring" the landing from a jumpseat, while a fourth was in the rear of the cabin.

"If there are four pilots there, even if you are sitting on a jump seat, that's something you watch ? the airspeed and the descent profile," said John Cox, a former US Airways pilot and former Air Line Pilots Association accident investigator.

The Air Line Pilots Association, the world's largest pilots union, criticized Hersman for fueling speculation that the crash is the result of pilot error before all the facts have been determined.

"The NTSB's release of incomplete, out-of-context information has fueled rampant speculation about the cause of the accident," the union said in a statement Tuesday. "The field phase of the investigation is barely three days old, and the pilots on the flight deck, at the controls of the aircraft, had little opportunity to provide vital information as to what exactly happened during the event before disclosing data recorded during the last moments of the flight. "

Hersman said the board was following its usual pattern of trying to be transparent by releasing information as it is known.

By Tuesday afternoon, NTSB interviews with three pilots were complete and the fourth was underway.

In addition, authorities were reviewing the initial rescue efforts after fire officials acknowledged that one of their trucks might have run over one of the two Chinese teenagers killed in the crash. The students, Wang Linjia and Ye Mengyuan, were part of a larger group headed for a Christian summer camp with dozens of classmates.

Asiana President Yoon Young-doo arrived in San Francisco from South Korea on Tuesday morning, fighting his way through a pack of journalists outside customs.

He met with and apologized to injured passengers, family members and survivors. But Yoon said he can't meet with the Asiana pilots because no outside contact with them is allowed until the investigation is completed.

More than 180 people aboard the plane went to hospitals with injuries. But remarkably, more than a third didn't even require hospitalization.

The passengers included 141 Chinese, 77 South Koreans, 64 Americans, three Canadians, three Indians, one Japanese, one Vietnamese and one person from France.

South Korea officials said 39 people remained hospitalized in seven different hospitals in San Francisco.

The flight originated in Shanghai, China, and stopped over in Seoul, South Korea, before making the nearly 11-hour trip to San Francisco.

Miami-Dade mayor proposes higher property-tax rate

Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez on Tuesday proposed raising the property-tax rate for the first time in three years to stave off cuts to fire and library services and fund a plan to stop killing dogs and cats at the county?s animal shelter.

The mayor?s 2013-14 budget increases the overall tax rate by 4.06 percent, a hike Gimenez said would avoid fire station and public library closures and pay for the animal-welfare plan that nearly 65 percent of Miami-Dade voters approved in a non-binding ballot question in November.

In an unincorporated neighborhood such as Kendall, a homeowner with a taxable property value of $200,000 would pay an additional $75.20 in county taxes, which make up only a portion of the tax bill.

Gimenez had cautioned in May that the county faced a $50.7 million general-fund budget hole, in addition to a $15 million library budget shortfall and a $15 million fire-rescue budget gap. Library and fire services are funded from property taxes separate from the general fund.

To close the general-fund gap, the county froze vacant positions, used one-time money available from tourist dollars known as convention development taxes and relied on higher projections from sales taxes and other revenues.

But that was not enough to plug the fire and library budgets. The tax base, which grew for the second consecutive year thanks to climbing property values, did not expand as much as county administrators had hoped, Gimenez said, and Florida lawmakers imposed higher, unforeseen healthcare and pension expenses on local governments.

His short-lived plan to shutter 13 libraries two years ago received so much pushback from county commissioners who must ultimately set the tax rate and approve the budget that the mayor this time decided to suggest a tax-rate hike instead.

?I don?t believe the people of Miami-Dade County want to cut back on library services or fire services,? Gimenez said.

But while the higher tax rate might prevent a political battle over libraries and fire stations, it will do nothing to stem conflict with the county?s labor unions over concessions that had been scheduled to expire next year.

Gimenez?s budget calls for workers to continue contributing 5 percent of their base pay toward health insurance costs, as well as for the extension of other concessions particular to each union. Most union contracts, negotiated for a three-year period, provide for reopening certain agreement provisions if the contribution is to continue past Jan. 1, 2014. The firefighters union is exempt because it has its own healthcare plan.

Union chiefs have accused the county of carrying a $42 million surplus in its health-insurance trust fund, which the administration counters helps maintain employee benefits and hold the line against health-insurance rate increases in the future. Miami-Dade Clerk of Courts Harvey Ruvin has agreed to conduct a financial audit of the fund at the unions? request.

?We can?t figure out where is the end of this surplus account. What is it being built up for?? Terry Murphy, a public affairs consultant working for the unions, told the Miami Herald?s editorial board on Monday. ?The commissioners have no idea about this money.?

The county has already declared an impasse over the concession provisions ? excluding the healthcare contribution, which is still pending ? with five unions. A sixth, representing solid waste workers, is at impasse over both the healthcare contribution and the other concessions.

?I anticipate a fight with labor,? Gimenez acknowledged.

The higher tax rate would be the first pushed for by Gimenez, who took the county reins after a frustrated electorate ousted former Mayor Carlos Alvarez in a recall prompted by Alvarez?s wildly unpopular 2010 tax-rate hike and employee pay raises.

In the painful budget he delivered two weeks after taking office in 2011 to complete Alvarez?s term, Gimenez reversed his predecessor?s handiwork and called for severe services cuts, layoffs and dramatic concessions from county workers. Last year, a month before his reelection bid for a full four-year term, Gimenez proposed further reducing the tax rate, that time maintaining services and avoiding job losses.

This article will be updated as more information becomes available.

Holly Willoughby Wants Female The Voice Coach

11:16, Tuesday, 9 July 2013

Holly Willoughby has suggested that The Voice 'needs' a female coach to replace departing star Jessie J.

The Wild singer announced that she would be leaving the show last week, and though Will.I.Am, Sir Tom Jones and Danny O'Donoghue have yet to confirm whether they will be back for the third series, Holly believes a female presence is essential.

The host of the BBC talent show told the Daily Telegraph: "For the sake of the panel it needs to be [a woman]. Otherwise it would be the wrong balance."

Holly also praised Jessie - who quit the show in order to focus on her own music career - saying: "I'm really going to miss Jessie. We were lucky to have her as long as we did.

"Whoever replaces her is going to have big shoes to fill."

Recent rumours suggest the BBC agrees with Holly, with Paloma Faith, Rita Ora and Emeli Sand? reportedly on their wishlist of replacement coaches.

Holly caused something of a storm during the recent final, with her cleavage drawing complaints from viewers.

Syrian govt. troops fight with rebels in Homs

Syrian govt. troops fight with rebels in Homs

July 8, 2013 - 17:45 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net - Syrian troops fought with rebels in Homs on Monday, July 8, in a battle seen as crucial to the government's attempts to drive a wedge between opposition-held areas and establish links between the capital and President Bashar al-Assad's coastal strongholds, Reuters reported.

Assad's forces have been on the offensive in the central Syrian city for ten days, hitting rebel-held neighborhoods with air strikes, mortar bombs and tanks.

Rebels control much of northern Syria but have been on the back foot against Assad's army further south since it retook Qusair last month, a town near the border with Lebanon, where victory marked a change in the government's fortunes.

At a time when the army has made gains on the battlefield, Syrian state media announced that new leaders had been appointed in the ruling Baath Party in a reshuffle that will be seen as an attempt by Assad to put a new face on the political organization that has dominated Syrian politics for more than four decades.

In Istanbul, the newly elected head of the opposition Syrian National Coalition told Reuters that the rebels' military position was weak and proposed a truce for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which begins on Tuesday, to stop fighting in Homs.

Clashes and bombardment were reported by activists in nearly every province on Monday, from the outskirts of the capital in the south to the northwestern farming province of Idlib to the eastern desert city of Deir al-Zor.

Group sues Opa Locka pastor, leaves church over money

For years, an Opa-locka pastor asked members of his congregation to open up their hearts ? and their wallets.

Since December, Anthony Cheverez of the Sanctuary Pentecostal Church has been sued by four women who left his church and claim that they lent him a total of about $20,000.

When an El Nuevo Herald team asked him about the lawsuits he is facing for not repaying thousands of dollars he had borrowed from members of his congregation, Cheverez, 46, who works as a maintenance mechanic at Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), pulled out his wallet and bragged that he was a federal officer ? though he never actually showed his ID.

Cheverez refused to comment on the four lawsuits filed by Nery Nancy Garc?a, who is disabled, Luz Marina M?ndez, who has worked selling hotdogs in the downtown area for almost two decades, Luisa Guerra and Karla Zald?var.

?I was conned mercilessly by these people,? said Garc?a, crying. ?This false prophet used the word of God to take our money. And he told us constantly that he was an immigration official.?

An ICE spokesperson said in an email that Cheverez did not make decisions on immigration policies and their enforcement.

?As public servants working for an enforcement agency, ICE employees must perform at the highest level of professionalism and ethical conduct,? the spokesperson said. ?Allegations of bad behavior are treated extremely seriously and are subject to proper investigation.?

For months, the women who filed the lawsuits say they contacted Cheverez and his wife asking for payment of the loans. After receiving no response, they decided to sue.

Bernice Cheverez, the pastor?s wife, who also preaches in the church, said that the lawsuits were filed by people who ?want to harm the church.?

Without giving any details, Bernice added that one of the cases had been resolved and they were working to settle another one.

The women used to visit the church at 4300 NW 135 St. However, that location has been closed. According to Bernice, the church moved when the lease expired.

Garc?a and Guerra filed lawsuits against the pastor and his wife for payments of $3,500 and $5,000 respectively.

According to Garc?a, 65, her first loan to Cheverez was for $500 before December 2011 to help build a new temple for the church.

Two months later, Garc?a lent him $6,000 more to organize ?Whit Sunday,? a journey commemorating the arrival of the Holy Spirit. Garc?a said that Cheverez told the congregation that this event, held on May 26, 2012, would cost about $40,000.

However, several months went by and Cheverez did not repay the money, Garc?a said. A Uruguayan who has lived in South Florida for 35 years, Garc?a urgently needed the money back because it was part of her brother?s pension, which she managed. Her brother had authorized Garc?a to use the money for any necessity.

Garc?a began discounting what she was owed directly from the offerings she used to give the church, which settled $3,042 of the $6,500 of the loan. After leaving the church, Garc?a sued in December 2012 for the remaining $3,500.

In April, the Miami-Dade court ruled that Garc?a was owed $2,900. The rest of the money was considered a donation.

?This has brought me a lot of problems,? Garc?a said. ?I lost my relationship with my brother, who is justifiably angry. At this moment, I don?t trust anybody. I distanced myself from all churches and now I am under psychological treatment.?

Murray ends Britain's 77-year wait at Wimbledon

LONDON (AP) ? Andy Murray needed one more point, one solitary point, to win Wimbledon ? a title he yearned to earn for himself, of course, and also for his country.

Britain had endured 77 years since one of its own claimed the men's trophy at the revered tournament referred to simply as The Championships, and now here was Murray, on the brink of triumph after 3 hours of grueling tennis against top-seeded Novak Djokovic under a vibrant sun at Centre Court.

Up 40-love, Murray failed to convert his first match point. And his second. And then, yes, his third, too. On and on the contest, and accompanying tension, stretched, Murray unable to close it, Djokovic unwilling to yield, the minutes certainly feeling like hours to those playing and those watching. Along came three break points for Djokovic, all erased. Finally, on Murray's fourth chance to end it, Djokovic dumped a backhand into the net.

The final was over.

The wait was over.

A year after coming oh-so-close by losing in the title match at the All England Club, the No. 2-ranked Murray beat No. 1 Djokovic of Serbia 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 Sunday to become Wimbledon's champion in a test of will and skill between a pair of men with mirror-image defensive styles that created lengthy points brimming with superb shots.

"That last game will be the toughest game I'll play in my career. Ever," said Murray, who was born in Dunblane, Scotland, and is the first British man to win the grass-court Grand Slam tournament since Fred Perry in 1936. "Winning Wimbledon ? I still can't believe it. Can't get my head around that. I can't believe it."

For several seasons, Murray was the outsider looking in, while Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Djokovic collected 30 out of 31 Grand Slam titles. But now Murray has clearly and completely turned the Big 3 into a Big 4, having reached the finals at the last four major tournaments he entered (he withdrew from the French Open in May because of a bad back). And he's now a two-time Slam champion, having defeated Djokovic in five sets at the U.S. Open in September.

All this from a guy who lost his first four major finals, including against Federer at Wimbledon in 2012. After that defeat, Murray's voice cracked and tears rolled as he told the crowd, "I'm getting closer."

How prescient. Four weeks later, on the same court, he beat Federer for a gold medal at the London Olympics, a transformative victory if ever there was one. And 52 weeks later, on the same court, he beat Djokovic for the Wimbledon championship.

"You need that self-belief in the important moments," observed Djokovic, a six-time major champion, "and he's got it now."

Murray's mother, Judy, who is Britain's Fed Cup captain, agreed that the setback 12 months ago "was a turning point in some ways."

"Every time you have a really tough loss, a loss that really hurts you," she said, "I think you learn a lot about how to handle the occasions better going forward."

Murray trailed 4-1 in the second set Sunday, and 4-2 in the third, before wiggling his way back in front each time.

He won the last four games, breaking for a 5-4 lead when Djokovic flubbed a forehand, setting off a standing ovation and applause that lasted more than a full minute. When he got out of his changeover chair, preparing to serve for the title, an earsplitting roar accompanied his trek to the baseline.

Djokovic missed a backhand, Murray smacked a backhand winner and added a 131 mph (211 kph) service winner, and suddenly one point was all that remained between him and history. That's where things got a tad complicated.

On match point No. 1, Djokovic capped a 12-stroke exchange with a forehand volley winner. On No. 2, Djokovic hit a backhand return winner off an 84 mph (135 kph) second serve. On No. 3, Murray sailed a backhand long on the ninth shot.

Now it was deuce.

"I started to feel nervous and started thinking about what just happened," Murray said. "There's a lot of things you're thinking of at that moment."

The match continued for eight additional points.

Seemed to take an eternity.

"Just how that last game went, my head was kind of everywhere. I mean, some of the shots he came up with were unbelievable," Murray said. "At the end of the match, I didn't quite know what was going on. Just a lot of different emotions."

Any of Djokovic's break points in that game would have made it 5-all, and who knows what toll that would have taken on Murray's mind? But Murray erased the first two chances with a 116 mph service winner, then a forehand winner on the 21st stroke.

At deuce for a third time, Djokovic conjured up a forehand passing winner to get his third break point. Murray dropped his head and placed his hands on his knees. The crowd clapped rhythmically and shouted, "Andy! Andy!" They couldn't know it, but their man wouldn't lose another point.

On a 16-shot exchange, Djokovic delivered an overhead that was retrieved, then tried a drop shot that Murray got back. Djokovic put the ball in the net, and Murray was at match point No. 4. When that one went Murray's way, the ball on Djokovic's side of the court, Murray dropped his neon-red racket, yanked his white hat off and pumped both fists overhead, screaming, "Yes! Yes!" He was looking directly at the corner of the stadium with benches for members of the press, a group that he used to worry helped fuel the intense pressure and only-one-way-to-satisfy-them expectations on Murray's shoulders.

"It's hard. It's really hard. You know, for the last four or five years, it's been very, very tough, very stressful," Murray said. "It's just kind of everywhere you go. It's so hard to avoid everything because of how big this event is, but also because of the history and no Brit having won."

When a Brit did win, 15,000 or so spectators around the arena rose and yelled right back at him, some waving Union Jacks or blue-and-white Scottish flags. Soon, Murray was climbing into the guest box for hugs with his girlfriend, his mother and his coach, Ivan Lendl, who won eight major titles as a player but never fared better than the runner-up at Wimbledon.

"I didn't always feel it was going to happen," said Murray, who fumbled with his gold trophy after the ceremony, dropping the lid. "It's incredibly difficult to win these events. I don't think that's that well-understood sometimes. It takes so much hard work, mental toughness, to win these sort of tournaments."

At the end, across the grounds, thousands responded with cheers while watching on a giant videoboard at the picnic lawn known as Murray Mount. And, surely, millions more following along on TV across Britain stood up from their sofas. British Prime Minister David Cameron was in the Royal Box, a sign of the day's significance, and Buckingham Palace confirmed that Queen Elizabeth II sent Murray a private message afterward.

"The end of the match, that was incredibly loud, very noisy," Murray said. "It does make a difference. It really helps when the crowd's like that, the atmosphere is like that. Especially in a match as tough as that one, where it's extremely hot, brutal, long rallies, tough games ? they help you get through it."

Said Djokovic, who famously ate blades of grass after winning Wimbledon in 2011: "The atmosphere was incredible for him. For me, not so much. But that's what I expected."

The fans were active participants throughout, lamenting "awwww" when Murray missed a serve; cheering rowdily when he hit one of his 36 winners, five more than Djokovic; shushing in unison when someone called out in premature agony or delight while a point was in progress.

That was understandable. Points rarely are over when they appear to be if Murray and Djokovic are involved. The elastic Djokovic's sliding carries him to so many shots, while Murray is more of a powerful scrambler. It took a half-hour to get through the opening five games, in part because 10 of 32 points lasted at least 10 strokes apiece. And this all happened with the temperature above 80 degrees (27 Celsius), with only the occasional puff of cloud interrupting the blue sky.

Born a week apart in May 1987, Murray and Djokovic have known each other since they were 11, and they grasp the ins and outs of each other's games so well.

"You've got to fight so hard to get past Novak, because he's such an incredible competitor, an amazing athlete, and it's never over 'til it's over," Judy Murray said.

This was their 19th meeting on tour (Djokovic leads 11-8), and their fourth in a Grand Slam final, including three in the past year. Both are fantastic returners, and Murray broke seven times Sunday, once more than Djokovic lost his serve in the preceding six matches combined.

In the late going, Djokovic was taking some shortcuts, repeatedly trying drop shots or rushing to the net to shorten points, but neither strategy tended to work.

"He was getting some incredible shots on the stretch and running down the drop shots," Djokovic said. "He was all over the court."

Admittedly feeling the effects of his five-setter Friday against Juan Martin del Potro ? at 4 hours, 43 minutes, it's the longest semifinal in Wimbledon history ? Djokovic was far more erratic than Murray, with particular problems on the backhand side. Djokovic wound up with 40 unforced errors, nearly double Murray's 21.

"I wasn't patient enough," Djokovic said.

Ah, patience. The British needed plenty when it comes to their precious, prestigious tennis tournament.

Thanks to Murray, the wait is over.

Weathercaster caught rolling eyes on live TV

TV

The forecast was sunny, but that didn't translate to the face of BBC weather presenter Wendy Hurrell on Monday's BBC News report.

Hurrell told British viewers that the weather promised "a gorgeous weekend," with "warm, sunny summer weather ahead." But once she threw the report back to BBC anchor Riz Lateef, the smile quickly faded from her face and with the camera still on her, she rolled her eyes, flipped her blond hair, and stared daggers off into the distance.

Some thought Hurrell was for some reason angry at Lateef, but the weather presenter quickly took to Twitter to explain that it was technical difficulties that brought on the angry face. Apparently she couldn't see any weather graphics while delivering the forecast.

"The roll of the eyes was because I had to do the whole forecast without being able to see any graphics -- it wasn't at @RizLateef!" she explained. "And clearly I was kept cut up in frame while I took out my frustration on the nearest inanimate object (green wall of the studio)!"

Lateef was quick to join in the Twitter parade to show she knew it was nothing personal. "Hey lovely, looks like the ten o'clock viewers were entertained this eve albeit by accident," she tweeted at Hurrell.

Hurrell responded, "So it seems! Brought them good weather news AND a chuckle! Darned computers, eh?! Best rhubarb ever?!"

And fans were quick to support an understandable, if entertaining mistake.

"Ahaha @WendyHurrell eye roll on BBC London weather was hilarious! I actually rewinded to see it again," wrote Pedro Silva.

And Hurrell admitted that sometimes life seems a lot like fiction, tweeting back, "It is actually really funny, even I have to admit. Our world is just like 'Anchorman.'"

From solemn to spectacular, July 4th celebrated

(AP) ? From solemn to spectacular, the nation marked its independence with the reopening of the Statue of Liberty for the first time since Superstorm Sandy, extravagant fireworks that including a 19-burst salute to Arizona's fallen firefighters, and a musical tribute in Washington to those affected by the Boston Marathon bombing.

"I always love July Fourth and I'm very happy to be in this country, I know I'm blessed," said 15-year-old Yoana Lorenzo, who was among the millions who watched the New York City's over-the-top Fourth of July Fireworks show Thursday night. "To see all these people come together and celebrate, it's pretty great."

Four barges carrying 40,000 shells on the Hudson River unleashed a barrage of brilliant reds, whites and blues ? some unleashed in shapes and smiley faces ? as spectators marveled at the famed New York fireworks display, snapping videos and pictures on their cellphones.

Earlier Thursday, hundreds lined up to be among the first to board boats destined for Lady Liberty, which opened for the first time since it was shuttered by Sandy. Among them was New Yorker Heather Leykam ? whose mother's home was destroyed during the storm.

"This, to us, Liberty Island, is really about a rebirth," said Leykam, who was with her family. "It is a sense of renewal for the city and the country. We wouldn't have missed it for the world."

In Prescott, Ariz., celebrations were a more subdued.

A fire chief read the names of the 19 firefighters killed last weekend battling a wildfire, while 19 single fireworks burst overhead.

"Less than 100 hours ago, the city of Prescott, the state of Arizona and the nation lost 19 of the best, the bravest firefighters ever dispatched into the forest," fire department division chief Don Devendorf said.

The commemorative starbursts were followed by a raucous 20-minute display choreographed to patriotic pop songs, which drew cheering, grins and shouts of "America!"

Also 19 candles burned beneath red, white and blue bunting, at Bistro St. Michael on Whiskey Row in the old West town ? one for each firefighter.

In California, more than two dozen people were injured when fireworks malfunctioned at a large community park in Simi Valley. Officials say 20 people were taken to hospitals with minor to moderate injuries, and another eight were treated at the park. A bomb squad was at the park to deactivate the remainder of the fireworks.

In Washington, thousands gathered on the National Mall to ring in the Fourth of July with fireworks and music. Neil Diamond sang "Sweet Caroline" in tribute to victims and survivors of April's Boston Marathon bombing. The song is a Fenway Park tradition, and Diamond performed it there in the aftermath of the attack.

Boston hosted its first large gathering since the marathon bombing that killed three and injured hundreds. While attendance for the city's celebration appeared to be down early, it increased as the start of the festivities approached. Crowds on the Charles River Esplanade seeming smaller than in recent years, while a robust law enforcement presence greeted revelers gathering for a performance by the Boston Pops and a fireworks display.

Among those at Boston's festivities was Carlos Arredondo, the cowboy hat-wearing marathon attendee who became part of one of the indelible images of the bombings' aftermath: helping rush a badly wounded man from the scene in a wheelchair, his legs torn to pieces.

Arredondo said the July 4 celebration ? an event authorities believe the bombing suspects initially planned to target ? is an important milestone in the healing process, not just for him but also those who were stopping to tell him their own stories of that day.

"I think there's no better place to be," said Arredondo, wearing his cowboy hat and a "Boston Strong" shirt in the marathon's blue and yellow colors.

Speaking at the reopening of Lady Liberty, Interior Secretary Sally Jewell choked up as she told the crowd she was wearing a purple ribbon in memory of the fallen firefighters.

"Nineteen firefighters lost their lives in the line of duty, and we as a nation stand together," she said through tears.

The island was decorated with star-spangled bunting, but portions remain blocked off with large construction equipment, and the main ferry dock was boarded up. Repairs to brick walkways and docks were ongoing. But much of the work has been completed since Sandy swamped the 12-acre island in New York Harbor.

The statue itself was unharmed during the storm, but the land took a beating. Railings broke, docks and paving stones were torn up and buildings were flooded. The storm destroyed electrical systems, sewage pumps and boilers. Hundreds of National Park Service workers from as far away as California and Alaska spent weeks cleaning mud and debris.

"It is one of the most enduring icons of America, and we pulled it off ? it's open today," National Park Service Director Jonathan Jarvis said. "Welcome."

The statue was open for a single day last year ? Oct. 28, the day before Sandy struck. It had been closed the previous year for security upgrades. Neighboring Ellis Island remains closed and there has been no reopening date set.

Nationwide, Philadelphia, Washington and New Orleans hosted large holiday concerts. A Civil War reenactment commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg drew as many as 40,000 people to Pennsylvania.

Also in New York, throngs of revelers packed Brooklyn's Coney Island to see competitive eating champ Joey Chestnut scarf down 69 hot dogs to break a world record and win the title for a seventh year at the 98th annual Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest. Sonya Thomas defended her title with nearly 37 dogs.

In his weekly radio address from Washington, President Barack Obama urged Americans to work to secure liberty and opportunity for their own children and future generations. The first family hosted U.S. servicemen and women at the White House for a barbeque.

Atlanta and Alaska held holiday runs ? thousands were racing up a 3,022-foot peak in Seward. In New Orleans, the Essence Festival celebrating black culture and music kicked off along the riverfront.

The celebratory mood turned somber in Oklahoma and Maine with fatal accidents during parades. In Edmond, Okla., a boy died after being run over by a float near the end of the town's LibertyFest parade. In Bangor, Maine, the driver of a tractor in the parade was killed after the vehicle was struck by an old fire truck.

Not everyone was welcoming the masses ? Hermosa Beach, Calif., was ramping up police patrols after years of drunken and raucous behavior from revelers. Hartford, Conn., postponed fireworks because the Connecticut River was too high.

Anti-surveillance protests cropped up in a number of cities on Independence Day, with activists speaking out against recent disclosures that the National Security Agency has been secretly logging people's phone calls and Internet activity. In Philadelphia, more than 100 people marched downtown to voice their displeasure, chanting, "NSA, go away!"

But in Union Beach, N.J., which was destroyed by Sandy, residents had something to celebrate. The working-class town won a party and fireworks contest from the television station Destination America and USA Weekend magazine.

"It's wonderful. Everyone's been so depressed," said Mary Chepulis as she watched a local band perform on a stage that stood where the home next to hers had been.

Riggo's request is proudest moment

John Riggins accomplished a lot between the lines on the football field. The short list would include being the Redskins? all-time leading rusher, getting inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and being the winner of Super Bowl XVII MVP award. But he is most proud of a football moment that took place not on the gridiron but in a small locker room in Herndon, Virginia.

It happened the day after the regular-season finale of the strike-shortened 1982 season. The Redskins had just beaten the Cardinals to wrap up home field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs.

But Riggins wasn?t thinking about that game. He was thinking back three years earlier, when the Redskins had blown a chance at having home field advantage through the playoffs when they lost to Dallas in the 1979 season finale after holding a 13-point lead in the late going. The loss eliminated the Redskins.

Being so close to the division title and a chance at the Super Bowl and blowing it like that ate at Riggins. ?It was a moment you thought you'd never see again,? he told CSN Washington last week.

It all hit Riggins as he was driving out to Redskins Park as the team started preparation for its first-round playoff game against the Lions. ??

?Literally, my hair stands up on the back of my neck,? he said. ?In acting, it's called emotional preparation, you're going to try to get into the emotion of the character when you go out of the stage.?

?I realize now that's what it was because I projecting about the opportunity that was before me. Here, finally, we had home field advantage. It was now or never. Really, the one thing when I got in the NFL that I always wanted to do was play in the Super Bowl. That's all I wanted.?

His mind raced during the 25-minute drive from his house to the team facility. ?The whole way, my life is flashing before me?high school, college, the Jets, George Allen, the whole deal about coming here and playing and struggling a little bit,? said Riggins.

He was thoroughly fired up by the time he arrived at Redskins Park. The first person Riggins saw when he walked in was Joe Bugel. The offensive line coach was what Riggins called one of his ?interpreters? who relayed messages back and forth between him and Joe Gibbs. ?Joe and I gave each other a wide berth,? Riggins explained.

With adrenaline in full flow, Riggins went up to Bugel and said, "Give me the ball. I'm ready to go. It's my show, give me the ball."

Apparently this was a message that Bugel felt would best be delivered to the head coach in person. "Well don't tell me. Go in there and tell the old man yourself,? said Bugel, pointing to the coaches? locker room.

After hesitating for a moment, Riggins went in and talked to Gibbs. "Joe, give me the football, I'm ready to play,? he said. ?If I get tired, I'll let you know. Other than that, just leave me in the game and give me the ball. I'm your guy."

What followed Riggins? big moment was somewhat anticlimactic.

"That's good to know John, thanks," said Gibbs.

Riggins said "OK", and walked out of the room.

?So that was it,? said Riggins. ?I think I averaged 34 carries and 150 yards a game (in the Redskins? run to the Super Bowl title), I guess he heard something.?

What took place in the playoffs, though, was just playing football as he had done most of his life. He is more proud of asking Gibbs for the chance to help carry the team than he is for actually putting it on his back and doing it.

?I've never been the guy to step forward and volunteer for anything,? he said. ?But there was a lot on the line . . . it was my 12th year in the league and I knew this was the moment. If you don't stand up, the rest of your life you're going to be sitting there going, ?I wish I would have said something??.

?So at least I had what it took in that moment to raise my hand and say, ?I'll go??.

"Riggo on the Range", John Riggins' hunting and cooking show, will be broadcast on Comcast SportsNet weekly starting this Saturday at 11:30 a.m. The program is sponsored by GEICO.

Samsung buys Boxee, keeping on full staff (update: Samsung confirms)

Report Samsung buys Boxee, keeping on full staff

Several Israeli news agencies are reporting that Korean electronics giant Samsung purchased set-top box company Boxee today. The Tel Aviv-based company apparently got less than the $30 million it was reportedly seeking, thus coming up at a loss since being founded in 2007. Boxee's approximately 40 employees are said to be staying on, including president Avner Ronen. A Boxee rep tells Engadget "We can't comment on the accuracy of those reports." Samsung has not yet responded to our inquiries, but we'll update this post as we learn more.

Update: TechCrunch is also confirming the acquisition, and cites its own "reliable sources."

Update 2: Samsung confirmed the acquisition to us this afternoon. A Samsung statement reads, "Samsung has acquired key talent and assets from Boxee. This will help us continue to improve the overall user experience across our connected devices."
