Huawei continues to demonstrate rail communication innovation at ...

Following recent ground-breaking rail projects that Huawei was awarded worldwide, Huawei will continue to address the need to place passengers at the heart of the railway, addressing safety and reliability as critical components. Along with carriage comfort, journey updates and free on-board entertainment, Huawei will join rail experts in supporting Middle East railway operators to encourage more public transport commuters.

The Middle East and especially the GCC is seeing increased investment in rail technology. Currently rail projects worth over $100bn are being developed in the GCC. The most ambitious project is the GCC Rail Network, which will span all six GCC nations linking each of the member states in a regional railway network. When completed in 2017, the network is likely to change the face of transport and logistics in the region. It will offer enormous efficiencies in transportation, as well as furthering the vision of a closely-integrated regional community.

Rabii Ouadi, Head of Business Development, Transportation Solutions at Huawei Enterprise, Middle East and North Africa, commented ahead of the event, "Within the next 10 years the transportation infrastructure in the Middle East will dramatically change, with countries around the region becoming interlinked and and becoming a more tight knit community. Huawei looks forward to attending the Middle East Rail event and getting even more involved in helping to shape the future of rail transport in the region. Through our recent appointment to provide GSM-R, transmission and datacom solutions for the 260km of the Etihad Rail project our GSM-R technology will deliver efficient communication by enabling the transmission of voice and data communication between rail track and on-board systems that enhances railway safety operations."

This year, Huawei will focus on its solutions in the 4G technology that is set to dramatically enhance passenger experience onboard the train. Another focus will be Huawei's GSM-R, a reliable and secure communication system developed especially for railways to enable seamless contact between train drivers and control dispatchers on station platforms. Datacom, Transmission Networks; ICT solutions for metro and urban rail, and Intelligent Video Surveillance solutions that are critical to the construction and operation of modern railway infrastructure will also be addressed during the event.

Mr. Ouadi added, "Looking towards the future of railway networks, communication providers believe that networks will ultimately use 4G LTE technology for all railway communication systems. Huawei is diligently researching and developing more railway features based on LTE, with the vision of ultimately merging and having only one single communication system infrastructure."

As a key participant and speaker at the event, Huawei has rail experts who will present its portfolio of railway ICT solutions, designed to address specific challenges related to GCC railway projects for both the train and metro. Highlights of how we are moving to the Digital train age will be discussed, along with another presentation entitled: "Smooth evolution built-in: how High Speed Railway Communications paves the way for train-ground broadband communication." A panel discussion will also be held on the first day, inviting industry international rail consultants, including Huawei, to provide their insights for ways that Middle East rail operators can increase their passenger numbers.

Huawei already has regional experience in providing mobile transmissions network for the Dubai Metro Green Line and is currently working on the Etihad Rail project providing the core network infrastructure with GSM-R, MSN (Multi-Service Networks) and a Masterclock.

Currently Huawei is collaborating with the European Rail Agency (ERA) to develop the future of LTE for railway networks. As a global player with impressive references in the rail and metro sector, Huawei will create synergies between different technologies with a view to laythe foundations for future railway networks in Europe and in the Middle East... To date, Huawei has successfully deployed networks and communication solutions in China with similar projects underway in Australia, Central Asia, Turkey, and South Africa for GSM-R and in many parts of the world for Rail and Metro transmission data solutions, including Europe and North Africa

Train-ground wireless network, based on 4G technology, enhances the passenger's experience on board a high speed train by allowing for onboard broadband internet and mobile coverage. Enabling passengers to video-call home and connect to the office over wifi or cellular networks, passengers can also keep track of their travel itinerary through integrated scheduling and ticketing systems: all accessible by downloading an application on their smart phones. Railway operators will also have the ability to share information on journey updates, passenger and train status as well as being able to keep a close eye on physical security issues by using the latest CCTV monitoring equipment.

Obama launches push for immigration overhaul

(AP) ? Seeking swift action on immigration, President Barack Obama on Tuesday will try to rally public support behind his proposals for giving millions of illegal immigrants a pathway to citizenship, as well as making improvements to the legal immigration system and border security.

The president will launch his push in a campaign-style event in Las Vegas, a day after a bipartisan group of senators unveiled their own plan for addressing an issue that has languished in Washington for years.

Administration officials said Obama would largely endorse the senators' efforts, though immigration advocates said they expected the president's own proposals to be more progressive than the Senate group's plan, including a faster pathway to citizenship.

The simultaneous immigration campaigns were spurred by the November presidential election, in which Obama won an overwhelming majority of Hispanic voters. The results caused Republican lawmakers who had previously opposed immigration reform to reconsider in order to rebuild the party's reputation among Hispanics, an increasingly powerful political force.

Most of the recommendations Obama will make Tuesday are not new. He outlined an immigration blueprint in May 2011 but exerted little political capital to get it passed by Congress, to the disappointment of many Hispanics.

Obama "believes that we are at a moment now where there seems to be support coalescing at a bipartisan level behind the very principles that he has long put forward and behind principles that have in the past enjoyed bipartisan support," White House press secretary Jay Carney said Monday. "And that is a very positive thing."

The president was to make his pitch in Nevada, a political battleground he carried in November, in large part because of support from Hispanics in the state.

Nationally, Obama won 71 percent of the Hispanic vote, giving him a key advantage over Republican rival Mitt Romney.

Administration officials said the president would bolster his 2011 immigration blueprint with some fresh details. His original plan centered on four key areas: a pathway to citizenship for the 11 million illegal immigrants in the U.S., improved border security, an overhaul of the legal immigration system, and an easier process for businesses to verify the legal status of workers.

Administration officials said they were encouraged to see the Senate backing the same broad principles. In part because of the fast action on Capitol Hill, Obama does not currently plan to send lawmakers formal immigration legislation.

However, officials said the White House does have legislation drafted and could fall back on it should the Senate process stall. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity in order to discuss internal strategy.

Gay and lesbian advocates were also expecting Obama's proposals to include recognition of same-sex couples where one partner is American and another is not.

Sen. John McCain called the issue a "red flag" in an interview Tuesday on "CBS This Morning."

The Arizona Republican also said he didn't think the issue was of "paramount importance at this time."

"We'll have to look at it," McCain said. But he added that the highest priority is finding a "broad consensus" behind the immigration bill already being planned. He said the country must do something about 11 million people "living in the shadows."

Obama's previous proposals for creating a pathway to citizenship required those already in the U.S. illegally to register with the government and submit to security checks; pay registration fees, a series of fines and back taxes; and learn English. After eight years, individuals would be allowed to become legal permanent residents and could eventually become citizens five years later.

The Senate group's pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants already in the U.S. would be contingent upon securing the border and improving tracking of people in the U.S. on visas. Linking citizenship to border security could become a sticking point between the White House and lawmakers.

The Senate framework would also require those here illegally to pass background checks and pay fines and taxes in order to qualify for a "probationary legal status" that would allow them to live and work here ? but not qualify for federal benefits ? before being able to apply for permanent residency, a critical step toward citizenship. Once they are allowed to apply they would do so behind everyone else already waiting for a green card within the current immigration system.

Passage of legislation by the full Democratic-controlled Senate is far from assured, but the tallest hurdle could come in the House, which is dominated by conservative Republicans who've shown little interest in immigration reform.

The senators involved in formulating the immigration proposals, in addition to McCain, are Democrats Charles Schumer of New York, Dick Durbin of Illinois, Robert Menendez of New Jersey and Michael Bennet of Colorado; and Republicans Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Marco Rubio of Florida and Jeff Flake of Arizona.

Several of these lawmakers have worked for years on the issue. McCain collaborated with the late Democratic Sen. Edward M. Kennedy on comprehensive immigration legislation pushed by then-President George W. Bush in 2007, only to see it collapse in the Senate when it couldn't get enough GOP support.

Zynga's shares rise 14 percent ahead of earnings report next week

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Zynga Inc's stock rose 14 percent on Monday as investors grew more confident that the social games developer behind "FarmVille" and "Mafia Wars" will deliver a solid set of quarterly results next week.

Its shares ended trading at $2.84, up 35 cents

Zynga reports quarterly results next Monday. In October, it raised the lower end of its 2012 earnings forecast and also announced a $200 million share buyback plan and a new partnership with British company bwin.party to offer online real-money gambling.

Last month, it put in a preliminary application to run real-money gambling games in Nevada.

Analysts said there was no news that caused the spike

Arvind Bhatia, an analyst at Sterne Agee, said, "Outside of Apple, it feels a little bit like we're in a little bit of bull market in tech. A lot tech memes are up even without any news. This one was perhaps underowned and maybe that's why people are saying in 2013 that's one they want to own.

"Volume is three times the normal volume and stock is up 13 percent and that's clearly telling you somebody's buying."

"They scheduled an earnings call for next Tuesday and haven't preannounced, so perhaps investors are feeling good about the quarter," said Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter.

The "FarmVille" creator has struggled to hold on to users for once-popular titles it publishes on Facebook, and is shifting focus to capture growth in mobile games.

Zynga is hoping that a lucrative real-money market could make up for declining revenue from games like "FarmVille" and other fading titles that still generate the bulk of its sales.

Last year, the games publisher carried out 11 of the planned shutdowns of 13 underperforming game titles, including simulation games like "Petville" and "FishVille."

As part of an on-going cost-cutting plan, Zynga laid off 5 percent of its full-time workforce and shut its Boston office last year and said it might consider closing its Japanese and British game studios.

"A lot of it is going to depend on Zynga's cost-cutting and there's are still a lot of issues as they don't have the advantages from their previous relationship with Facebook," said Sterne Agee analyst Bhatia.

Smartphone Applications for business ? are you getting left behind ...

Junior Designer James Mercer

A new report by Flurry states that more than 1.7 billion apps were downloaded in the week after Christmas. In the UK alone 132 million apps were downloaded in seven days, more than twice as many as Germany. The app world is massive, and growing ? Flurry expects more than 52 billion apps to be downloaded in 2013.

The key question is what this phenomena means for business and how a small to medium sized business can really benefit from developing its own apps? There are already millions of useful apps that businesses can download ? such as Bump which allows entrepreneurs to ditch traditional business cards in favour of virtual ones. Users can trade contact information, photos and files imply by ?bumping? two Smartphones together. But why would a business consider developing its own app as part of its marketing strategy?

Try these benefits for starters:

- Advertises your brand to new markets
- Builds and reinforces brand loyalty
- Increases visibility and accessibility
- Increases exposure across mobile devices, connecting you with on-the-go consumers
- Generates repeat business
- Enhances your social networking strategies

To achieve these great business benefits your app needs to have a great download-ability factor. Put simply, your app needs to provide the user with something that enhances their everyday activities ? either through a service, an interest or even fun. These elements will establish your app on the download charts and ensure that consumers return to them once they?ve been downloaded.

At Quantum PR we?re currently developing an app based on business events and exhibitions. For visitors to a business exhibition apps provide the perfect channel to relay up to the minute information such as details on products available, speakers, competitions taking place or directions to different stands. Our app will enable a delegate to completely plan their visit to the exhibition, highlighting who and what to see where ? smart business sense. And any business can now develop its own app to promote into its own marketplace and build its brand recognition.

So what do consumers expect from a business-led app?

- Easy access to your brand, products and services and the key benefits that it provides
- Notifications of special events, launches, and importantly offers
- One-touch access to your information
- Directions to your location

So is your business getting left behind?

The smartphone application market is growing massively, By combining great design with excellent functionality (and of course marketing!) apps have the potential to help you develop new markets for your products and services.

If you?re not yet convinced that apps are worth researching further ? consider this: By 2014 there will be more than 2 billion smartphone users worldwide. So perhaps it?s time to look to get ahead, rather than get left behind.

Waldo Fire Victims Feel Bullied By Insurance Companies

Homeowners affected by the Waldo Canyon Fire feel like they are in a tug-of-war battle with their insurance companies.

Over 100 residents filled the room at a heated and emotional call-to-action meeting Saturday with representatives from the Colorado Division of Insurance. (DORA).

Dozens stood up for their families and spoke their minds about mistreatment of their fire insurance settlement claims.

The fire victims say they feel abused, neglected and bullied by their insurance companies.

"I've been intimidated, I've been harassed, I?ve been ignored and in the meantime I just want my home back to the pre-loss condition that my policy states I should have,? said Mountain Shadows homeowner Judy Brinkman. ?I?m not asking for anything, I don?t want any money from the insurance companies that I am not owed.?

The meeting addressed damage settlements, repairs, property replacement and customer service issues.

Families and homeowners were very emotional as they talked about health issues, improper damage evaluations, and unresponsive adjusters. Many said they are not being properly paid for their losses.

?Everyday you wipe off the dust, you wipe off the suit and ashes. And it got so hot inside the house, that our windows are separated from the house itself? said Peregrine homeowner Julie Pruitt.

?They've like we don't have to cover that, or the other comment is 'always prove that is from the fire.' We're just in circular arguments, frustration, anger, resentment; there's just nowhere to go. You just feel like such a victim,? said Brinkman.

The main issues brought up were: suit, ash and smoke damage, exterior house damage, insurance companies' failure to investigate properly, non-responsive insurance adjusters, no time extensions, family health issues caused by the fire, damage not evaluated properly, under insured, suffering from additional costs, not being paid for their losses. Many asked for DORA to investigate their insurance companies and how they are handling their claims.

?I?m a Vietnam veteran, I went over to Vietnam to protect the people of the United States, and I did my duty. That?s why DORA has to do their duty, and state representatives have to do their duty,? said Mountain Shadows homeowner Ron Haberkorn.

Families who just want to move on after the Waldo Canyon Fire say the insurance woes are taking a huge emotional toll.

"People just need to be made whole and let people move on, but it's hard to move on when you don't have closure on getting things fixed, and having to struggle through that every day,? said Pruitt.

The newly formed Catastrophic Insurance Complaints in Colorado (CICIC) Association held the meeting at the Colorado Springs Together Facility.

Residents had the chance to offer their issues in order to form some solutions in front of DORA, as well as local and state leaders and legislators.

If you need help with your Waldo insurance issues, contact CICIC at 719-660-8158.

Or submit a complaint to DORA at: http://www.dora.state.co.us/pls/real/Ins_Complaint.Submit_Form

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Rep. Paul Ryan says Republicans need to stay united and pick their fights during President Barack Obama's second term.

The party's vice presidential nominee from 2012 tells conservatives that Republicans need to reject the president's proposals in some cases and make them better in others.

The Wisconsin lawmaker said in a speech Saturday to the National Review Institute in Washington that Obama will try to divide Republicans. But Ryan says GOP lawmakers "can't get rattled" and shouldn't "play the villain in his morality plays."

Ryan defends his vote on the "fiscal cliff" deal. He says that if the measure hadn't passed, every single taxpayer would have paid higher taxes.

Powers of prophesy: Davos looks to the future

DAVOS, Switzerland (AP) ? Forget the endless debates about the euro or government debts. What does the future hold?

The World Economic Forum at Davos is always a showcase for new research, trends and ideas. And those at the annual gathering of the world's elite don't shy away from making predictions, even if they missed foreseeing seminal events like the Great Recession or the Arab Spring revolts.

Here are some predictions from this year's participants:

WEATHER AND WATER

Climate change will lead to more and more extreme weather, which will cause tremendous economic upheaval, predicts New York University economist Nouriel Roubini.

"It's not just that New York is going to be underwater 30 years from now," he said, referring to the devastation caused last fall by Hurricane Sandy.

Oxford University physicist Tim Palmer ? who said as a scientist he preferred probabilities to prediction ? noted there is a 10- to 15-percent chance that the Earth will warm by 6 degrees Celsius within a century, leading to "catastrophic consequences for humanity" ranging from extreme weather to rising seas.

Vali Nasr, dean of the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University, said many countries will start running out of water in the coming years.

"Water is the new oil," he said.

A TECHNOLOGICAL SURGE

Laura Tyson, a business professor at the University of California at Berkeley, said one of the great concerns should be "the employment effects of technology," with so many jobs being rendered obsolete by scientific or technological advances.

Discussions of such advances were everywhere at Davos.

Sebastian Thrun, a computer science professor at Stanford University and leader of Google's Self-Driving Car Project, said he thinks Google co-founder Sergey Brin's prediction that within five years driverless cars will be on the streets used by regular people is going to happen.

"It'll be a while before they're going to be mainstream, and there'll be all kinds of interesting questions coming about security, privacy, safety of the system as a whole," Thrun said. "But if they are available within five years for general consumers, I think within 15 years you ought to be able to buy one of those."

MENTAL ILLNESS UNDERSTOOD

Edward Boyden, an associate professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who directs a neural engineering research group, says new technologies for analyzing the brain will produce significant advances in fighting mental illness.

"Right now we know that certain cell types in the brain are impaired in schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder or autism," he said.

If scientists can develop new technologies to image the brain and control the brain's cells, he said "over the next half-century or so we should be able to really understand how these networks" generate emotion.

Then, in the case of mental illness, "we can insert information into the cells in order to re-sculpt their dynamics and fix what's broken," Boyden said.

Technology entrepreneur Eric Anderson said biotechnology and medicine "are eventually going to be information sciences, with your genes... will determine treatment."

THE LIGHTEST STUFF

Julia Greer, an assistant professor of materials science and mechanics at the California Institute of Technology, says the world is craving a useful, ultra-superlight material to work with.

Her research group collaborated with Hughes Research Lab (HRL) and the University of California, Irvine, to recently develop the world's lightest solid material. She predicted that in 10 to 15 years it will be used as fuel cell catalysts, as acoustic damping devices on submarines, as anti-reflective layers in solar cells, and as components of vehicles sent into space.

The new material, called a micro-lattice, is made up of tiny hollow tubes of nickel-phosphorous that are angled to connect ? and contains 99 percent air, Greer said. It can also be used for high-temperature thermal batteries, heart stents and blood clot catchers, she said.

On a related topic, Roy Johnson, the chief technology officer for Lockheed Martin, predicted huge advances in 3-D printing.

POWER TO THE PEOPLE

One of the most famous predictions is Moore's Law, named after Intel co-founder Gordon Moore, which says that computing power doubles every two years or so. It has proven stunningly correct so far, putting new technological devices in everyone's pockets.

But how long will this law hold? Paul Jacobs, the CEO of Qualcomm, said it's not so certain anymore.

The implications of effectively infinite computing power are staggering ? no more waiting for a power-up or a download; every song, movie and TV episode instantly available; and even the possibility of what scientists call artificial intelligence.

But Jacobs told The Associated Press that the law might be valid only "a couple of more generations."

"I'm worried. In the next couple of nodes we're going to stop getting those numbers unless somebody figures out something," he said.

YOUTH OF THE WORLD UNITE

Former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, now the U.N. special envoy for global education, said huge advances in the Internet and technology are enabling young people to connect with each other and "this is opening up the world in a way that has never happened before."

"Young people are beginning to see that the gap between the opportunities and rights they have been promised and the opportunities and rights that are delivered to them is wholly unacceptable," he said at a session on the forum's sidelines. "And the sense that they are being deprived of these opportunities and rights is, I think, going to be the big motivating force over the next few years."

Second suspect charged, not yet arrested, in Texas campus shooting

SAN ANTONIO (Reuters) - A second man has been charged in a shooting at a community college near Houston that left three people wounded on Tuesday, but he has not yet been arrested, the sheriff's office said.

"It's only a matter of getting the cuffs around him," spokeswoman Christina Garza of the Harris County Sheriff's Office said on Thursday. She said officials believe they know his whereabouts.

The shooting at Lone Star College, which has some 10,000 students, occurred as the United States weighs stricter gun controls. The fierce debate over ownership of certain guns and ammunition was reignited after a December shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, left 20 children and six adults dead.

The Houston Chronicle reported on Thursday that court records showed the second suspect appears to have been the shooter and not Carlton Berry, who has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the campus shooting.

Garza declined to confirm that, and she did not name the second suspect or detail the charges.

Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia said on Wednesday the shooting occurred during a "ridiculous confrontation" between Berry, 22, and Jody Neal, 25.

Neal, who was hospitalized for gunshot wounds to his leg and abdomen, will not face criminal charges. Berry had an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound and was being held in a jail hospital ward, Garcia said. He said he did not know what prompted the argument.

College maintenance worker Bobby Cliburn, 55, was wounded in the crossfire, and a woman was taken to a hospital for an anxiety attack, according to authorities.

Troops: Women should meet same standards as men

(AP Photo/Mark Humphrey, File)

(AP) ? During her time in Iraq, Alma Felix would see her fellow female soldiers leave the Army installations where she worked at a desk job and head into combat with their male counterparts. But many returned home feeling that few knew of their contributions.

"I guess we do disappear into the background," the 27-year-old former Army specialist said. "You always hear we're losing our sons out there. And although women have fallen out there, you really don't see very much of it."

Now, with the Pentagon ending its ban on women in combat, Felix and other female troops hope the military's plan to open hundreds of thousands of combat jobs to them will lead society to recognize that they, too, can be courageous warriors.

"We are the support. Those are the positions we fill and that's a big deal ? we often run the show ? but people don't see that," she said. "Maybe it will put more females forward and give people a sense there are women out there fighting for our country.

"It's not just you're typical poster boy, GI Joes doing it," she said.

Thursday's announcement promises to change the image of battlefields around the world, as debate rages on whether women can fight like men. What's clear is that the move will pave the way for women to earn higher pay and earn better promotions.

The shift is the military's biggest since the policy banning openly gay service members was lifted in 2011. And as was the case with "don't ask, don't tell," troops were expected to fall in line with the new rules.

The change overturns a 1994 rule prohibiting women from being assigned to smaller ground combat units, and is expected to open up more than 230,000 combat positions that have been off limits to women.

"We owe it to them to allow them to pursue every avenue of military service for which they are fully prepared and qualified," said Defense Secretary Leon Panetta. He said women have shown they are willing to fight and die alongside their male counterparts.

Across the country, members of the military of both sexes said they accepted the policy so long as women will have to meet the same standards as their male colleagues. Both men and women were skeptical about putting females in infantry units, however.

"This gives us more people to work with," said Army Sgt. Jeremy Grayson, assigned to field infantry at Fort Bliss, Texas. "But they would have to be able to do the physical stuff that men do. ... They have to be able to pull their own weight."

Panetta said the qualifications will not be lowered and acknowledged that not all women will meet them. He said allowing women to serve in combat roles will strengthen the ability of the U.S. to win wars.

It will be up to the military service chiefs to recommend whether women should be excluded from more demanding and deadly positions, such as Navy SEALs or the Army's Delta Force.

Veterans and some in the military argue the public may not be ready to handle seeing more female troops come home in body bags or with lost limbs. "It's harder to see a mother or a daughter dead. We (men) are seen as protectors," said Army Staff Sgt. Anthony Lemaitre.

Army Spc. Jean Sardonas, who works as a lab technician at a hospital, said she understood Lemaitre's opinion.

Sardonas said she had thought about joining an Army team that conducts social work in the field and faces combat situations. But she's since become a mother, changing her perspective, and said women tend to be more emotional.

"If you see the enemy, well, that's the enemy, but now if you see a kid with a gun you're going to think twice," she said.

At McP's Irish Pub near the Navy SEALs base in Coronado, battle-hardened veterans chuckled and sighed at the news. There were no celebrations planned yet at the dark bar decorated with combat memorabilia, a framed article announcing the death of Osama bin Laden and a bronze plaque quoting W.C. Fields saying: "Marry an outdoors woman, then if you throw her out into the yard for the night, she can still survive."

"I think our culture instinctively teaches us to take care of women and we won't be combat ready," said the pub's owner and a former Navy SEAL, Greg McPartlin, who is a Bronze Star recipient. "We're more interested in protecting her than shooting the bad guy."

Felix bristles at that kind of thinking but has heard that from young male soldiers. "It's hard to see any comrade fall, whether it's a woman or a man," she said.

Women comprise about 14 percent of 1.4 million active military personnel. More than 280,000 women have been sent to Iraq, Afghanistan or to jobs in neighboring nations in support of the wars. And of the more than 6,600 U.S. service members who have been killed, 152 have been women.

The New York veteran who started the nation's first Veteran of Foreign Wars post for women welcomes them in elite forces. But making allowances for women would be "a detriment to the team," said Marlene Roll, who served with an Army Reserve medical unit during the first Gulf War. "If she can make it through the course and she can graduate, hell yeah."

Linda L. Bray was just glad to see the Pentagon finally laud women's bravery.

Bray said her male superiors were incredulous upon hearing that she had led dozens of male military police officers through a three-hour firefight during the 1989 invasion of Panama.

Instead of being lauded for her heroism, she said, higher-ranking officers accused her of embellishing accounts of what happened. Congress debated fiercely over whether she and other women had any business being on the battlefield.

"I think it's absolutely wonderful that our nation's military is taking steps to help women break the glass ceiling," said Bray, of Clemmons, N.C.

"I hope the women who attempt to take on these challenges in the military don't do it because now it's OK for them to do it," she said. "I hope they do it because they really want to make a go of being a man's partner in going to war."

Microsoft announces Surface Pro tablet pricing, makes us appreciate Tim Cook all over again

Microsoft has announced pricing and availability for their Surface Pro tablet/laptop hybrid -- tabtop? laplet? -- and it's going to hit on February 9 and start at $899. Unlike the Surface RT, the Surface Pro runs full-on Windows 8 and includes an Intel Core processor (and has the fans to prove it). Our own Daniel Rubino from Windows Phone Central lays it out:

Featuring a Core i5 or Core i7 Intel processor (according to Cnet) with either 64GB or 128GB of storage, the high-end device with a 1080P display wont come with a Touch or Type Pad, requiring an extra purchase. However, users will get the pressure sensitive pen for note taking.

If an iPad isn't enough, and a MacBook Air is too much, you could argue that something like the Surface Pro might be just right. I'm not enjoying Windows 8 yet, so my Windows boxes are staying on 7 for the time being, but I'm eager to give Microsoft's first party version a try. I don't think Surface RT nailed it. In its attempts to be no-compromises, it ended up completely compromised. But it was version one, and Microsoft's trademark typically involves stumbling on version one, persevering, and killing it on version two or three.

When it comes to the pricing, however, what springs to mind is just how important Tim Cook has been for Apple. It's hard to imagine Microsoft is getting the same price breaks on components that Apple enjoys with their hundreds of millions of units of scale, or that their logistics and supply chain management is anything approaching what Apple's put together over the course of the last decade. Under Cook, that's been the element that lets Apple manufacture the best consumer electronics hardware in the world, do it for less than anyone else, and sell it at margins that have made them one of the most profitable businesses this side of oligopolies that control limited fossil fuel resources.

That leaves competitors with cheaper parts, lower margins, or higher prices -- they get to pick two of the three. And it's not like Microsoft can license Windows 8 to themselves on the Surface to make their usual, obscene software margins. It's going to be a learning experience and a struggle, and it'll be interesting and exciting to see how this new drive into hardware goes for them. Anyone planning to eschew an iPad or a MacBook for a Surface Pro?

Yes, it was a joke by Supreme Court's Thomas

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - When Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas broke his nearly seven-year silence during oral arguments last week, there was much speculation about what exactly he said. Just four cryptic words appeared in the court's unofficial transcript.

Now it can be told: It was nine words and apparently a joke.

The court on Wednesday issued a revised transcript that suggests Thomas, a graduate of Yale Law School, uttered a light-hearted jest about a lawyer who once attended his alma mater's archrival, Harvard.

At the January 14 argument, the justices considered the qualifications of two court-appointed lawyers, one from Harvard and one from Yale, who had once represented a Louisiana death penalty defendant. It was a side issue as the court weighed whether the defendant was denied a speedy trial.

The revised transcript shows that the lawyer representing Louisiana, Carla Sigler, called the Yale-educated lawyer a "very impressive attorney" and the Harvard-educated lawyer "very exceptional."

That prompted Thomas to weigh in. "Well, there - see he did not provide good counsel," he said.

The original transcript had Thomas saying "Well - he did not" but it was hard to make out the words because there was much courtroom laughter and cross-talk among the justices.

Sigler seemed to hear what was said. "I would refute that, Justice Thomas," she gently responded. Later, she said that she went to Harvard too.

All nine current justices attended or graduated from either Harvard or Yale law school.

Kathy Arberg, a court spokeswoman, said the company that produces the transcripts routinely reviews their contents, including by checking audio recordings of the oral arguments.

"Presumably the revision was the result of its own standard procedures," she said.

Stephen Singer, the Harvard lawyer being discussed by the justices, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Thomas has long been critical of Yale Law School, having written in his memoir of once affixing a 15-cent price sticker to his 1974 diploma and storing it in his basement. In recent months he has taken steps toward reconciliation.

He has in the past given various reasons for his quietness on the bench, including a preference for listening and the volubility of his colleagues.

Regardless, the revised transcript shows that Thomas did not ask a question. He has not asked one from the bench since a February 22, 2006, oral argument. That streak continues.

P&G Tips to maximize family budgets

The holiday season is now over and as we sit back and reflect about the joyous festivities, we can't help but also think about our 2013 budget which may or may not have a dent in it after gift giving and holiday hosting. Soon we will be facing the much?dreaded?post-holiday bills and some of us may be scratching our heads as to what happened and how we can get back on track for the New Year.? Sandra Hanna, CEO and co-founder of www.smartcookies.com has some great tips to help ease the pain of the headache that comes with post-holiday budget blues. We had the opportunity to listen to Sandra speak at the P&G event last November, shes a fantastic person with some amazing ideas to help families everywhere.?

Find free outdoor activities:

During the weeks the kids are off on holidays, or on weekends, why not participate in free outdoor activities like sliding at a local public hill, skating at a local public rink or even look into free winter festivals that may be taking place in your neighbourhood. These activities keep everyone happy and won't make an impact on your already dented budget.?

If you live in a close-knit neighbourhood you can also invite the local kids together for a snowman parade. This is where kids build snowmen and parade them around the block in a wagon or sled. Maybe even have a judging contest (of course everyone would win, it's all for fun after all).

Workout at home:

There's no need to keep up with the?Jones'?and spend on a gym membership this year. You can get a simple workout right at home. If you're willing to tough it outside a brisk walk, run or snowshoe could be the best workout you have all year. Best of all these activities cost you nothing but time and energy, if you want to work off that post-holiday overindulgence, these are great starting points. In winter months it can even be fun to get a group of friends together and share winter workout gear or workout music playlists to help eachother get motivated to meet their workout goals. With the money saved, you could all enjoy a nice hot chocolate or late for a treat afterward.?

Cold water wash:

No matter what the season, I wash our laundry in cold water. It saves money on electricity, use of hot water and also not as hard on the clothing. Less chance of shrinking that new sweater mom got me for Christmas. Using cold water and detergent like Cold Water Tide can actually save about $7 a load in energy costs. With the amount of laundry we do per week - those savings can definitely add up!

Winter Staycation:

Want to take the family on a vacation on an already tight budget? Why spend hundreds on a vacation somewhere hot and balmy when you can save money on a staycation right in your own city! You'd be surprised how fun and inexpensive a staycation close to home can be. Local hotels, restaurants and attractions often have off-season discounts you can cash in on. Just do a little research about where you're heading and call in advance letting them know about your local staycation to see if they have any discounts and savings you could use for your family. Being local you may just find a cheap hotel room rate or family meal discounts in hotels and restaurants!?

For more great money saving tips don't forget to follow @SmartCookies on Twitter and Like the SmartCookies Facebook fan page!

Happy winter budgeting!
