L.A. city attorney candidate Mike Feuer gets Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's endorsement, not Carmen Trutanich

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa endorsed former Assemblyman Mike Feuer for Los Angeles City Attorney on Thursday over incumbent Carmen Trutanich.

Villaraigosa said he's known Feuer for 20 years, and called him tenacious and innovative about solving problems.

The mayor's choice for city attorney isn't exactly a surprise. Villaraigosa had supported Trutanich's competitor, former Councilman Jack Weiss, four years ago. And the mayor and Trutanich have repeatedly fought over budget cuts to the city attorney's office.

Still, Trutanich's campaign blasted the endorsement Thursday.

"Villaraigosa is making a serious mistake by endorsing a career politician" like Feuer, the campaign said in a statement.

"The Trutanich campaign will accept the approval of the voters over the endorsement of City Hall insiders any day."

Feuer said Trutanich's attitude as city attorney has been troublesome, and has hindered city business.

"We've seen that here in Los Angeles with the incumbent and other civic leaders, whose combativeness, divisiveness, contentiousness have apparently been at a premium. Solving problems - not so much."

Feuer said that if elected city attorney, he'd make sure the gun control laws he authored are enforced.

The other candidates in the race are private attorneys Noel Weiss and Greg Smith.
